You can’t ignore us: what role does family play in student engagement and alienation in a Ghanaian university?

Much of the existing literature on student engagement focuses on what happens within the higher education environment or what the institution has direct control over, restricting understanding of how issues outside of the institution affect engagement. This paper argues that efforts to improve student engagement should be broadened to incorporate issues relating to the family. It employed a case study design in order to develop a broad and more in-depth understanding of how family influences the amount of time and effort students invest in their learning in a large public university in Ghana. It was established that engagement is influenced by family expectation, financial and social support, as well as monitoring of students’ academic performance. The unique contribution of the study is that it broadens current understandings of engagement because it adds an aspect that has not been highlighted in current work on engagement, making a case for institutions to work more with families to get a broader understanding of challenges students face in order to provide comprehensive support.     

Brazil in the Age of Electronic Commerce

E-commerce is growing rapidly in Brazil, led by information-intensive and transaction-intensive sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and retail/wholesale. However, Brazil's highly uneven income distribution is a major barrier for B2C diffusion. Government policies have emphasized promotional or enabling initiatives such as e-procurement, tax filings, and providing Internet access to social institutions. E-commerce legislation is just now being developed, and decisions on taxation are being negotiated in the context of international agreements. E-commerce raises issues for Brazil in terms of its relationship to the global economy. Although most online purchases involve imported goods, e-commerce also offers opportunities to participate in international value chains.

Domesticating Computers and the Internet

The people who use computers and the ways they use them have changed substantially over the past 25 years. In the beginning highly educated people, mostly men, in technical professions used computers for work, but over time a much broader range of people are using computers for personal and domestic purposes. This trend is still continuing, and over a shorter time scale has been replicated with the use of the Internet. This paper uses data from four national surveys to document how personal computers and the Internet have become increasingly domesticated since 1995 and to explore the mechanisms for this shift. Now people log on more often from home than from places of employment and do so for pleasure and for personal purposes rather than for their jobs. Analyses comparing veteran Internet users to novices in 1998 and 2000 and analyses comparing the change in use within a single sample between 1995 and 1996 support two complementary explanations for how these technologies have become domesticated. Women, children, and less well-educated individuals are increasingly using computers and the Internet and have a more personal set of motives than well-educated men. In addition, the widespread diffusion of the PC and the Internet and the response of the computing industry to the diversity in consumers has led to a rich set of personal and domestic services.     

计算机实验室管理系统安全策略探讨

基于nRF401/nRF403的公交车电子候车牌设计

论述了公交车电子候车牌的工作原理，设计出一种可行的设计方案，它是由一台PC机、多个无线收发模块及以单片机为核心的显示电路构成的一个局部无线网络。论述了单片机与无线收发模块的硬件接口设计，点对多点无线通信协议的编写，点对多点无线通信系统的软件设计，并对该系统的实现原理和主机端模拟行车路径进行初步论述。     

基于LabVIEW串行通信系统的开发

虚拟仪器是由软件实现的．其软件开发平台是LabVIEW。VISA是在所有LabVIEW工作平台上控制VISA、GPIB、RS-232以及其他种类仪器的单接口程序库，通过LabVIEW平台中的VISA模块编写控制程序，可以进行仪器控制。本文以串行通信为例．用LabVIEW构建仪器控制进行串行设备通信．在虚拟环境中使用VISA功能模块向串行设备读写数据，缩短了项目开发周期，提高了开发效率。     

新中国成立初期华北地区婚姻家庭变迁诸问题

新中国成立前,华北地区的婚姻家庭以包办婚姻和买卖婚姻为主,多数是保守的传统形式。建国后,在《婚姻法》的带动下,该地区的婚姻家庭发生了巨大而迅速的变迁。在这一变迁过程中,围绕婚姻自由、家庭财产保障等产生了一些值得观注的社会问题。这些问题的产生,并非只是因为婚姻自由权利无法得到保障,更多地是由于社会结构的剧烈变动。新中国成立初期婚姻家庭的变迁是一种国家权力支持下的自上而下的变迁,虽然没有获得全面成功,但新型的婚姻家庭制度已经基本确立起来。     

On the effects of motivation on reading performance growth in secondary school

This research aimed at identifying unique effects of reading motivation on reading performance when controlling for cognitive skills, familial, and demographic background. We drew upon a longitudinal sample of N = 1508 secondary school students from 5th to 8th grade. Two types of intrinsic reading motivation (reading enjoyment, reading for interest), one type of extrinsic reading motivation (competition), and reading self-concept were measured by self-report questionnaires. Cognitive skills (reasoning, decoding speed) and reading performance were assessed using standardized tests and background variables were collected using student and parent questionnaires. Applying latent growth curve modeling, positive unique effects of reading enjoyment and reading self-concept and a negative unique effect of competition on the initial level of reading performance were recorded. Moreover, a positive unique effect of reading for interest on reading performance growth was recorded. One may conclude that enhancing students’ interest might be fruitful in terms of nurturing reading performance.
