Teacher participation in school-based professional development in China: does it matter for teacher efficacy and teaching strategies?

ABSTRACT

Although Chinese teachers commonly participate in school-based professional development activities, there is a remarkable scarcity of large-scale quantitative research into the effectiveness of teacher professional development in China, which is characterised as an institutionalised practice. Based on a conceptual framework applying recent research knowledge, this study investigates the relationships between teacher participation in school-based professional development and its individual and school contextual antecedents and effects on teachers and teaching in the context of mainland China. A total of 1506 secondary school teachers responded to a questionnaire survey. The results show that teachers’ willingness to attend teaching research activities and supportive principal leadership facilitated teacher participation. Among the three dimensions of teacher participation, it was collective lesson planning and teacher collegiality, not the frequency of participation, that improved teacher efficacy and the adoption of desirable teaching strategies. These results enrich the knowledge about the characteristics and effectiveness of teacher professional development in China. The implications of the findings are discussed.

基于MFC的《离散数学》实验演示系统的设计与实现

针对离散数学的特点,以MFC和面向对象技术为设计环境,建立了一个可视化的离散数学实验演示系统。该系统实现了抽象概念可视化、界面操作可视化、处理结果可视化的要求。通过演示主合取范式、二部图匹配、群的判定、等价关系、等价类和Krushal算法求最小生成树五个子功能模块,展示了该实验演示系统的功能。     

Recruitment and management development for primary headship

This article seeks to explain the ways in which leadership makes a difference to the quality of instruction in US schools by reviewing research published since 2000. The review of research is presented in three major sections, organised according to the methodology used in each study. The first section looks into quantitative studies that probe the structural relationships among members and activities related to teaching and learning. Primarily drawing on surveys completed by school stakeholders, these studies uncover patterns of influence using advanced statistical methods. The second section summarises findings from qualitative case study research, which provide specific examples of conditions that support the leadership patterns previously identified. The final section offers further explanations of how these patterns of influence operate by examining the alignment of formal and social components of interactions through network methodology.

Accelerated matrix recovery via random projection based on inexact augmented Lagrange multiplier method

In this paper, a unified matrix recovery model was proposed for diverse corrupted matrices. Resulting from the separable structure of the proposed model, the convex optimization problem can be solved efficiently by adopting an inexact augmented Lagrange multiplier (IALM) method. Additionally, a random projection accelerated technique (IALM+RP) was adopted to improve the success rate. From the preliminary numerical comparisons, it was indicated that for the standard robust principal component analysis (PCA) problem, IALM+RP was at least two to six times faster than IALM with an insignificant reduction in accuracy; and for the outlier pursuit (OP) problem, IALM+RP was at least 6.9 times faster, even up to 8.3 times faster when the size of matrix was 2 000×2 000.
