Culturally diverse as they are, Asian-American children and youth share quite a few features among themselves. Most of them
are children of foreign-born parents who came to America during the post-1965 immigration waves. As they grow up in culturally
isolated environment, they are often faced with identity crisis. The society’s racial exclusion makes them feel like “forever
foreigners,” while at home or community their American frame of reference is often in conflict with parents’ traditional values.
As a result, they develop a flexible concept of identification. In fact, they are a part of but also apart from the American

The researchers addressed two questions: (1) Does maternal reading mediation and family home literacy environment (HLE) relate
to children’s emergent literacy (EL) level? and (2) Do the relationships among these variables differ as a function of socioeconomic
strata (SES) level. A total of 94 5–6-year-old children, 47 from low SES (LSES) and 47 from high (HSES) families, and their
mothers participated. Mother–child interactions while reading an unfamiliar book were videotaped and their verbal expressions
were coded for extracting maternal mediation level. Children’s independent EL level was assessed prior to the interaction.
Compared with the LSES group, HSES children showed higher EL levels and their homes had a richer literacy environment. Maternal
mediation level differed by SES: LSES mothers paraphrased text more often; HSES mothers’ higher mediation level included a
discussion of the written system and making connections beyond the text. In the HSES group, maternal mediation level and HLE
related to children’s EL; no such relationships appeared in the LSES group. Results are discussed in terms of children’s socio-economic
background and their reading experiences. Implications for researchers and educational practices about the relationships between
children’s literacy development, SES, HLE, and parental mediation are discussed. 相似文献

In 1990 Steve Garner produced a school text book titled Design Topics: The Human Factors of Design. He briefed the various graphic artists engaged by the publishers, Oxford University Press, via nearly 140 thumbnail sketches. A comparison of these sketches with the final illustrations reveals important values of drawing. Not only do the comparisons enable the viewer to see something of the intent of the sender, they reveal processes of interpretation, selection, rejection and development, which are normally not available to examination. The paper seeks to contribute to substantiating the value of sketches to these processes of design team working. Since the author is also the originator of the sketches an additional level of insight and commentary is made available to the reader via a process of reflection. 相似文献

1998-2002年,澳大利亚国家图书馆以该国历史上的土著儿童强制隔离政策为内容开展了一项名为“带他们回家”的大型口述史项目。该项目具有全民动员、实施先导项目、重视对采访人员的培训及对土著文化的研究四个特点,鼓励被隔离土著人倾诉自己的心声,找回自己的文化身份,同时让澳大利亚社会得以了解土著儿童隔离政策的真实面目。我国图书馆应吸取其中有益经验,以开放的态度对待口述史项目,重视对口述史项目工作方案的测试,尊重受访人的文化身份和文化敏感性,重视访谈资料的文字转录工作。 相似文献
