Education in the Sudan: the privileging of an Islamic discourse

This article examines the educational discourse in the part of the Sudan administered by the Government of the Sudan. It first analyses the value system upon which the Sudanese education is based by focusing on the nature of Islamism. Such a discussion is necessary because the dominant discourse is a discourse where power and Islamic theocracy legitimise each other and spill over into the educational discourse. Given the ethnic and religious complexity in the Sudan the imposition of a fundamentalist Islamic discourse is fiercely contested. The second part of the article, therefore, discusses the educational discourse of the government and relates it to the oppositional discourses in the country. It pays particular attention to the homogenising efforts of the dominant discourse to eradicate difference as a constituting factor in the Sudanese education system. The attempts to recognise difference have not led to a fundamental negotiation of the consequences of Islamism in the official school system.     

On Drawing,Visual Language and the Pictorial Image: An Interview with John Willats

The editorial team of TRACEY, an online drawing journal hosted by Loughborough University School of Art & Design, was interested to learn more about John Willats’s current thinking on the subject of drawing and to put to him a number of specific questions to do with the functions of drawn marks, notions of pictorial syntax, the role of ambiguity and imprecision in drawing and future directions for drawing research. He kindly agreed to an interview, which took place in his Somerset studio on Thursday 6th December 2001. The following is an edited version of that interview.

通过对CBA各俱乐部主场所在地的研究,分析了CBA主场所在地的位置、环境、经济状况等现状以及存在的问题,以期为联赛发展提供思路。     

When I was at school – differences in stories about school told by parents of home-schooled and regular-schooled children

Home schooling has become increasingly widespread over recent decades in the western world. Since the choice to educate children at home in effect signifies abandonment of the educational system, one may assume that parents’ childhood experiences within the educational system play a significant part in their decision to opt for home schooling. The present study takes a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to investigating the choice in favour of home schooling and compares the childhood memories of school reported by 28 mothers of home-schooled and regular-schooled children. Data were analysed in three stages – determining the nature of the experience; performing a thematic analysis; and arranging the themes into groups of meta-themes. Six interviewees reported an entirely positive experience; 6 reported an entirely negative experience; and 16 reported a mixed experience. Analysis of the text revealed 30 themes, which were grouped into five meta-themes: treatment, attributes, teachers, studies and social relations.     

Is every child's voice heard? Researching the different ways 3‐year‐old children communicate and make meaning at home and in a pre‐school playgroup

This ESRC‐funded study explores how 3‐year‐old children use a range of ‘voices’ during their first year in pre‐school, investigating how they make and express meaning ‘multimodally’ through combinations of talk, body movement, facial expression and gaze in the two different settings of home and playgroup. Using longitudinal ethnographic video case studies of four children, two boys and two girls, the study identifies patterns in the children's uses of different communicative strategies that relate to the dynamics of the institutional and immediate contexts in which they are situated. The findings imply that the current focus on talk in the early years may be detracting from the diversity of ways children make and express meaning.

如何架构和呈现中国女性学的现代性一直是当代女性作家探求的命题。本就蒋韵的创作实践，从具体作品入手解析本话语含蕴．探讨蒋韵对化选择的独特性，指出其是在漂流和自然中实现对精神家园的寻找的。由此指明了一条女性学现代化的可行途径。     

从《史记》到《冻苏秦衣锦还乡》看叙事焦点的转移

元杂剧《冻苏秦衣锦还乡》取材于《史记》中的《苏秦列传》、《张仪列传》,但是在《史记》的基础上,剧作家通过采用情节移植、设置悬念、改简略为具体的艺术手法,实现了叙事焦点的转移。《史记》关注的是苏秦的政治作为,而杂剧关注的是苏秦在争取功名前后亲人之间的关系,通过苏秦前后的落魄与富贵来表现人情冷暖、世态炎凉。从重历史到重人情,苏秦的形象也发生了一些改变,司马迁笔下的苏秦是一个才华横溢的纵横家形象,而元杂剧中的苏秦还参杂着落魄文人的形象,并且恩怨思想更为明显。
