One component of the curriculum reform in Hong Kong focuses on the use of homework in consolidating learning, deepening understanding and constructing knowledge. This study examines the profile of Hong Kong primary school students' homework involvement, and investigates the relationships between time involvement and academic attributes, namely interest in homework, interest in academic subjects, academic efficacy, and efficacy for self-regulated learning. The sample comprised 2,361 primary school students representing all six grade levels in Hong Kong. Data was collected using questionnaires and homework diaries. Results showed heavy homework involvement among primary school students in Hong Kong, especially at the senior primary level. Differential patterns across levels were observed for the relationship between homework involvement and academic attributes. Specifically, junior primary students' study-related interests and efficacies were found to decline with increasing time involvement, whereas inverted U-shape relationships were observed among senior primary students. There was concern for students with high time involvement as they received more homework and they worked slower. They were less likely to perceive the positive functions of homework, and showed poorer study-related interests and efficacy beliefs. The findings of this study provide crucial information for school personnel and educators in Hong Kong in developing homework strategies and policies that enhance teaching and learning.  相似文献

This paper reveals the complex diversity that underpins ostensibly similar transnational education programmes (TNE), through a comparison of UK TNE in Malaysia and Hong Kong. It draws on data from two different yet cognate studies on the role of UK universities in delivering higher education in Asia. Some fine-grained and informative differences between the ways in which ‘value’ in TNE is constructed in different host contexts is revealed. The paper brings to light the ‘voices’ of TNE students and graduates, which are very seldom heard. The arguments adapt and extend the concepts of education as a positional good, and as cultural capital. For various instrumental, intrinsic and personal reasons the authors discuss in detail, UK TNE is more highly valued in Malaysia than in Hong Kong. The paper makes a wider contribution to knowledge on the changing landscape of international higher education and the impact on social and personal (dis)advantage.  相似文献

The study reported herein aimed to identify and discuss the nature and pattern of the uses of new media through a notable YouTube phenomenon. It analyzed 132 online videos centered on ‘Bus Uncle,’ a YouTube celebrity who rose into fame in Hong Kong during April 2006. Most of the videos drew references from local popular culture texts. They were mostly playful and sarcastic in their undertones. The collective behaviors in YouTube suggest that this hugely popular video-sharing site takes on the roles as public space, a playground and a cultural public sphere.  相似文献

��[Purpose/significance] Scientific cooperation has become a common phenomenon in research activities, and many research projects have also included teamwork in the scope of assessment of implementation effects. Therefore, it is beneficial to the evaluation and sustainable development of the talents projects to explore the changes in the cooperation relationship before and after their receiving the support and explore the role of Cheung Kong Scholars in team building, international and domestic cooperation.[Method/process] In this study, we take the recipients in 2005 of the Cheung Kong Scholars Award as example and take the Wilcoxon signed rank test method to analyze the changes in the cooperative relationship before and after their receiving the award. The cooperative relationship includes the following aspects:the size of the cooperation social network, the strength of cooperation, the duration of cooperation, the role of cooperation, the strength of international and domestic cooperation. The dataset of this study comprised 83 researchers and 11 522 SCI/SSCI papers published between 1996 and 2015, and the analysis was divided into two 10-year periods-the preaward period (1996-2005) and the postaward period (2006-2015).[Result/conclusion] It is found that the Cheung Kong Scholars have played a leading role in team building, international and domestic cooperation after reviving the award. The scholars significantly increased their cooperation social networks (42 VS. 148) and enhanced their cooperation strength (2.17 VS. 2.45) with their partners in the postaward periods. However, the duration of cooperation between the recipients and their collaborators before and after receiving the award was relatively short, and nearly 70% of the cooperation lasted only one year. Moreover, the scholars' coauthorship patterns changed significantly after receiving the award. In both number and proportion, they became less likely to act as the first author, but more likely to be listed as the last author or corresponding author.  相似文献
