地名学不仅有重要的学术价值,而且有重要的现实意义。文章第一次系统地分析和论述了临沧地名的产生和发展演变,并且对临沧境内的部分古地名提出了自己的独到见解。该文对深入认识临沧基本市情和进一步研究临沧地名,宣传临沧、提高临沧知名度必将产生重要的作用。     

高校图书馆报纸管理创新

报纸具有记录性好、易于保存、报道及时和详尽等优势,拥有固定的读者群体,是高校图书馆必备的纸质文献。湖南人文科技学院图书馆采用了有别于传统报纸管理的方法:架层类别排架法、差异要求阅览法、一一对应法。架层类别排架法既符合读者的阅览兴趣,又有利于读者阅报后的正确归位和报纸管理员的更新与整架工作;差异要求阅览法有效地解决了报纸乱架问题;一一对应法大大节省了报纸更新的时间成本。     

有关《上海成人教育志》第9章“远程教育”第1节“函授教育”的若干补正(上)——以《申报》的记载为考察中心

上海社会科学院出版的《上海成人教育志》之第9章"远程教育"第1节"函授教育"的撰述具有非常重要史料价值和学术价值,但是经过考证和核对,可以发现其对一些函授学校办学情况的介绍与《申报》的记载不相符合,出现了较多的错误和不当之处。在此前提下,文章认真分析了产生上述问题的具体原因,并提出了一些有针对性的建议,以期将来可以更好地提高这部教育专志的撰写水平。     

Interview with Lawrence Grossberg

Cultural studies seems to have passed into the shadows of academic interests, replaced by globalization and political economy as the new millennium's privileged concerns among left academics. Yet, cultural studies' longstanding interest in the interrelationship of power, politics, and culture remains critically important. Matters of agency, consciousness, pedagogy, and rhetoric are central to any public discourse about politics, not to mention education itself. Hence, this article argues that the promise of cultural studies, especially as a fundamental aspect of higher education, resides in a larger transformative and democratic politics in which matters of pedagogy and agency play a central role.     

Movement and Resistance: (Tattooed) Bodies and Performance

This essay is a genealogy of the performances of extensively tattooed individuals in tattoo contests held at tattoo conventions. It focuses on how the body in performance cites historical discourses and how that citation is necessary for both resistant and recuperative effects. I argue that the force of the normalizing discourse of class to contain and dictate the meaning of the (tattooed) body is challenged through actual and immanent movement. I conclude by emphasizing the resistant potential that is always immanent in the body by showing how the explicitly tattooed body's actions overflow and subsequently dismantle the logic of class normalization even as they resist and recuperate it.     

World Newspaper Archive

The World Newspaper Archive is an ongoing collaborative digital project of the Center for Research Libraries and its partner institutions to preserve historical newspapers and news‐related materials from around the globe and provide persistent electronic access to them. The first release, begun in December 2008, involves newspapers from Latin America. With the cooperation of member institutions, the WNA is expected to grow to include Eastern European newspapers as well. The author encourages librarians to contact him with information on complementary collections of material as well as interest in collaboration.     

The Staging of Agency in Girls Gone Wild

This paper addresses the ambivalence produced by Girls Gone Wild (GGW) as both text and social practice by interrogating the ways in which it functions hegemonically by staging an effect of agency. I draw on Bakhtin's notion of the carnivalesque as a means to examine how contradictory spatio-temporal contexts of GGW function as spaces that offer the opportunity to momentarily transgress—yet simultaneously reify—white, bourgeois norms of femininity. The videos reinforce a neoliberalist mentality of personal responsibility through the inclusion of the consent—and dissent—processes on camera. After analyzing how postfeminist discourses emphasizing “individual choice” justify GGW as a mode of female empowerment, I turn to a complementary textual analysis of GGW's role-reversal counterpart, Guys Gone Wild (2004), in an effort to show the ways in which this “mirror image” text ultimately reinforces the structure of exploitation in the original.     

Public Character and the Simulacrum: The Construction of the Soldier Patriot and Citizen Agency in Black Hawk Down

This essay examines how the film Black Hawk Down functions rhetorically to reconstruct the legitimacy of political and military institutions and policy, and the possibilities for efficacious, responsible citizen agency within the post-September 11, 2001 context of increasingly unconventional warfare. Black Hawk Down reconstitutes popular perceptions of war and the appropriate response of citizens to it. It continues a pattern of contemporary war films established by Saving Private Ryan in 1998, reducing the patriotic purpose of war to surviving and protecting one's fellow soldiers. This pattern is developed through a hyperreal spectacle of war that both encourages audiences to empathize with the dominant “pro-soldier” message and discourages critical public discourse concerning justifications for and execution of military intervention policy.
