Students’ views on the effectiveness of motivational interviewing for challenging disaffection

Emerging evidence suggests motivational interviewing (MI) is an effective intervention for supporting disaffected students. However, previous literature has failed to establish students’ views on MI. In the present study, three students took part in an individual MI intervention, delivered by three educational psychologists (EPs). Self-report measures of school-based motivation and semi-structured interviews were used to obtain student views, post-intervention and at three month follow-up. EP interview data were also used to contextualise findings from student interviews. Qualitative findings indicated that students were generally enthusiastic about the intervention and perceived some positive impact on behaviour. However, these views were not consistent with questionnaire responses and two of the pupils experienced exclusions around the time of the intervention. The implications of these ambiguous findings are discussed, in relation to contextual factors that are likely to have influenced the effectiveness of the interventions.

Becoming a strategic reader

An important aspect of learning to read is understanding how to use strategies to aid comprehension. Many actions such as skimming, using context to discern unfamiliar words, and taking notes to aid remembering can promote reading comprehension and learning. In this paper we examine aspects of knowledge and motivation that are critical to becoming a strategic reader. We emphasize that agents are strategic, not actions removed from contexts, and that self-guided learning depends on the intentions, perceptions, and attributions of learners. Learning to read strategically is related to children's cognitive development as well as to the social contexts of instruction. Some suggestions are offered for classroom instruction that can promote children's awareness and use of strategic reading.

A small study assessing teacher effectiveness: Does learning last?

Students of six classes who had previously participated in a larger study of teaching styles were tested a year after completion of the course. The purpose of the follow-up was to determine whether or not the prior battery of tests, including a student evaluation of instructor form, the Introductory Psychology Criteria Test, an Attitude Toward Psychology Scale, and a knowledge test, administered in a large group setting independent of those used for grades by instructors, would be positively related to student performance on comparable tests given a year later. The follow-up measures included items from the above measures plus questions regarding experiences and readings related to psychology in the year since the students' introductory course and two brief experiments which the students were to critique. Results indicated that the end of the semester measures of teaching effectiveness in terms of student performance and attitudes were positively related to similar responses obtained a year later.
