Influences affecting the soil-water characteristic curve

INTRODUCTION The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) gives the relationship between the amount of water in the soil (i.e. gravimetric or volumetric water content) and soil suction (i.e. matric suction at low suction and total suction at high suction). Many properties of a partially saturated soil such as the coefficient of permeability, shear strength and volume strain, pore size distribution, the amount of water contained in the pores at any suction, can be obtained from the SWCC. …     

Study on the submerged fermentation (SMF) of termitomyces eurrhizus

The influence of KH\-2PO\-4, peptone and brown sugar on Termitomyces fuliginosu's mycelium formation was studied with the application of the design of quadratic rotation general combination based on determining the growth curve. A quadratic regression model of biomass to the doses of the above three factors was established. The model fit well and therefore the optimum fermentation condition was obtained. Responses of biomass to the three single factors and to their interactions were discussed. Thus, the highest level of biomass, 21.1 g/L, appeared under the optimized conditions when the initial KH\-2PO\-4, peptone and brown sugar were 1 g/L, 4 g/L and 72 g/L respectively.     

Mathematical biography and key rhetoric

The intention of this article is to consider the use of narrative and rhetorical inquiry as research methods. I construct a mathematical biography of one elementary teacher trainee, Sirpa, who had performed well in her advanced mathematics course in upper secondary school. I describe her development as a mathematics teacher during teacher education from her second-year methods course and teaching practice to fourth-year teaching practice. Narrative inquiry is more than a case study: Sirpa’s mathematical biography is a story that describes how she constructs her mathematical identity. I also analysed the key rhetoric that Sirpa used in her talk, key rhetoric here referring to the strategy by which she constructed continuity and coherence.

分析了财经院校本科专业的数学教育现状和学生数学素质培养方面存在的问题,详细阐述了大学生数学建模活动的主旨、特点及作用,指出数学建模活动在培养学生的数学素质,特别是在提高学生的创新能力方面有明显的效果.进行了两次财经院校本科生数学学习现状的问卷调查,并对调查结果进行了分析.最后,指出了大学生数学建模活动进一步深入发展的必由之路是以数学基础课为主干,实现数学基础知识与体现数学应用特点的数学模型的有机结合.     

Constellations of risk factors as moderators of the impact of a randomized intervention on students’ reading skills in rural India

Individual, family and community risk factors might determine the success or failure of educational interventions. The study is a secondary analysis, aimed at identifying distinctive constellations of risk for educational attainment, and at exploring whether membership to these constellations moderated the impact of a cluster-randomized reading intervention in rural India. By means of latent profile analysis, four constellations of risk were identified based on individual and family risk-factors. Multilevel cumulative logit models confirmed that the intervention had a positive impact on the outcome, and revealed that profile membership did not moderate the effect of the intervention. However more nuanced analysis showed that the intervention worked differently for children with different risk-profiles depending on contextual factors.

Peripheral Ritualized Practices—Threads Connecting Decorations to the Cloak of Identity

This is an ethnographic study which investigates the practices of language maintenance and ethnic identity affiliation for immigrant/migrant Nepalese families with primary to middle school children in the United Kingdom. The study presents a comparative case study analysis of three Nepalese immigrant/migrant families. Participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and historical narrative interview were used. The study investigated prior exposure to home country, ethnic, cultural, and social literacy practices that occurred in various contexts during a nine-month period. This analysis revealed a phenomenon I termed peripheral ritualized practices. Exposure to peripheral ritualized practices over time creates positive changes in attitudes toward multilingualism and diversity.
