Remembering or Misremembering? Historicity and the Case of So Far from the Bamboo Grove

A recent controversy in the USA centres on classroom use of Yoko Kawashima Watkins’s semi-autobiographical So Far from the Bamboo Grove (1986), a novel focused on the flight of Japanese settler families to Japan after the liberation of Korea at the end of World War II. Taught in a literary and historical vacuum under the thematic umbrella of “courage and survival,” the novel has been criticised as an example of “perpetrator as victim” representation. Because of its assumed high “truth value,” life-writing positions itself very specifically as a narrative of a “witness” recounting her story. The resultant authentication of suffering may thereby render issues of historicity effectively irrelevant. Diverse interpretative communities may thus read the novel in incompatible ways.

Effects of Cooperative Learning on Students’ Understanding of Metallic Bonding

The present study focused on investigating the effectiveness of instruction via newly developed teaching materials based on cooperative learning when compared to a traditional approach, on ninth grade students’ understanding of metallic bonding. Fifty-seven ninth grade science students from two science classes in the same high school participated in this study. The same teacher taught metallic bonding with cooperative learning to an experimental group (N = 28) and with a traditional teacher centred approach to a control group (N = 29). Students’ conceptual understanding of metallic bonding was measured using the Metallic Bonding Concept Test. The results from the Student’s t test indicated that the mean score of the students in the experimental group was significantly higher in the experimental group (78.60, SD = 8.62), than in the control group (54.33, SD = 9.11) after treatment. In the light of the results from the concept test and individual interviews, the misconceptions related to metallic bonding were found less in the experimental group than traditional. Five of these misconceptions were firstly identified in this study. The individual interviews which were done with students from experimental group immediately after the instruction showed that students had positive perceptions about their cooperative work experiences.     

Historical Experiments in Students’ Hands: Unfragmenting Science through Action and History

Two students, meeting together with a teacher, redid historical experiments. Unlike conventional instruction where science topics and practices often fragment, they experienced interrelatedness among phenomena, participants’ actions, and history. This study narrates actions that fostered an interrelated view. One action involved opening up historical telephones to examine interior circuitry. Another made sound visible in a transparent air column filled with Styrofoam bits and through Lissajous figures produced by reflecting light off orthogonal nineteenth century tuning forks crafted by Koenig and Kohl. Another involved orienting magnetic compasses to reveal the magnetism of conducting wires, historically investigated by Oersted and Schweigger. Replicating Homberg’s triboluminescent compound elicited students’ reflective awareness of history. These actions bore pedagogical value in recovering some of the interrelatedness inherent in the history and reintroducing the wonder of science phenomena to students today.     

Das Recht auf Veröffentlichung im Spannungsverhältnis zur Drittmittelforschung

Immer öfter finden sich Wissenschaftler im Bereich der Drittmittelforschung mit der umstrittenen Rechtsmeinung ihrer Auftraggeber konfrontiert, die Verwertungsrechte an wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten stünden diesen zu. Inwieweit dies als zutreffend angesehen werden kann sowie die Beziehung zu dem im Universitätsgesetz verankerten Recht des Wissenschaftlers auf Veröffentlichung, soll den Untersuchungsgegenstand dieses Beitrages bilden.     

Der Zusammenhang des Migrantenanteils in Schulen mit der Lesekompetenz: Differenzierte Analysen der erweiterten Migrantenstichprobe von PISA 2003

Zusammenfassung  Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der Frage empirisch nachgegangen, ob in Schulen der Anteil von Jugendlichen, deren Familien aus der ehemaligen Sowjetunion oder aus der Türkei zugewandert sind, einen eigenst?ndigen Effekt auf die individuelle Lesekompetenz hat. Die zugrunde liegende Datenbasis bildet eine Teilstichprobe von 14.169 Jugendlichen aus der erweiterten Stichprobe von PISA-E 2003. Die mehrebenenanalytischen Auswertungen zeigen, dass der Anteil von Jugendlichen, deren Familien aus der ehemaligen Sowjetunion stammen, unter Kontrolle einer Vielzahl von Individual- und Kompositionsmerkmalen keinen eigenst?ndigen Effekt auf die Lesekompetenz hat. Im Gegensatz dazu findet sich für den Anteil von Jugendlichen türkischer Herkunft ein signifikant negativer Zusammenhang mit der Leseleistung. Mit einem Leistungsnachteil von 22 Punkten auf der PISA-Skala ist der Effekt in Schulen, in denen der Anteil dieser Herkunftsgruppe an der Schülerschaft gr?βer als 40 Prozent ist, besonders ausgepr?gt. The effectiveness of a high-intensity games intervention on improving indices of health in young children

This study assessed the effectiveness of a 6-week, high-intensity, games-based intervention on physiological and anthropometric indices of health, in normal weight (n = 26; 32.5 ± 8.9 kg) and obese (n = 29; 49.3 ± 8.9 kg) children (n = 32 boys, 23 girls), aged 8–10 years. Children were randomised into an exercise or control group. The exercise group participated in a twice-weekly, 40 min active games intervention, alongside their usual school physical education classes. The control group did not take part in the intervention. Before and after the intervention, participants completed both a maximal and submaximal graded exercise test. The submaximal exercise test comprised of a 6 min, moderate- and 6 min heavy-intensity bout, interspersed with a 5 min recovery. The exercise group demonstrated improvements in maximal oxygen uptake (51.4 ± 8.5 vs 54.3 ± 9.6 ml · kg^?1 · min^?1) and peak running speed (11.3 ± 1.6 vs 11.9 ± 1.6 km · h^?1), and a reduction in the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise between assessments (P < .05). A decrease in waist circumference and increase in muscle mass were observed between assessments for the obese participants randomised to the intervention (both P < .05). This study demonstrates that a short-term, high-intensity games intervention may elicit positive changes in physiological and anthropometric indices of health in normal weight and obese children.
