Math for the Benefit of Society: A New MATLAB-Based Gen-Ed Course

Abstract

Responding to a call for national reform of mathematical education, as well as a college-wide revision of general education (GE) requirements, we describe a new entry-level, GE course focused on the humanitarian utility of mathematics. This includes a detailed overview of how we taught the course using a Humanitarian MATLAB Lab Manual developed collaboratively with undergraduate students within an applied math program. A PRIMUS edition of this manual with complete MATLAB materials for a GE course is included as an Appendix for interested readers. A variety of social justice issues including peace-building after modern civil wars, continued cancer risk after Chernobyl, gang reduction, various dimensions of human trafficking, the use of a tractor and herbicide in subsistence farming, equitable resource distribution during the Syrian refugee crisis, and access to HIV vaccines are included in this special edition of the manual.     

A non-invasive approach to differential diagnosis of urinary tract infections using lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme profile,N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and alanine aminopeptidase

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and its isoenzyme profile, Nacety-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) and alanine aminopeptidase (AAP) enzyme activities were measured in 21 cases with well documented acute untreated urinary tract infections (UTI) and compared with a group of 68 normal healthy subjects matched for age and sex. Urinary NAG, AAP and LDH total activities were highly elevated (3–30 fold for NAG, 2–10 fold for AAP and 2–50 fold for LDH over upper limit of normal) in upper tract infections. In lower tract infections there was a marginal elevation in NAG and LDH while AAP activity was very high; though there was no overlap. Further, the isoenzyme profile of LDH showed predominance of LD-5 isoenzyme in all cases of pyelonephritis, while it was completely absent in all the cases of lower tract infections. We conclude that urinary NAG and LDH-5 isoenzyme would serve as specific non-invasive parameters for differential localization of urinary tract infections.     

基于模糊神经网络的农业设备剩余寿命预测与仿真

该系统具备了神经网络自学习和模糊推理处理不确定信息的能力。通过仿真实验和仿真结果表明,该系统能有效地进行农业设备样本模式的模糊量化处理,极大地改善了神经网络训练的收敛性。通过对模糊神经网络系统的多次测试,当实际数据与学习样本接近时,该系统能够得出与样本相同的预测结果;当输入数据与学习样本偏离时,该系统依然能够得出准确的预测结果,达到了农业设备剩余寿命预测的要求。     

Routines and collective orientations in mathematics teachers’ professional development

There is an increasing awareness of the social dimension in mathematics teacher education. Collaboration and co-operation are regarded as key factors in professional development. In this paper I will analyse some tensions that might arise when the professional development of mathematics teachers is considered a collective enterprise. I will present phenomenological group interview as a method that is designed to reveal the collective character of teacher development. Some primary teachers’ collective reflections on an ongoing professional development process will be interpreted by focusing on the concepts of routine and collective orientation. The discussion is centred on the ambivalence of routines, as facilitators of practice, and collective orientations, as socially-agreed-upon knowledge base, for mathematics teachers’ professional development.

用ROM存贮阵列构成逻辑电路

本文论述用ROM的存贮阵列构成新颖的组合逻辑电路和时序逻辑电路的基本原理,并给出两个实际的阵列式逻辑电路的设计方法。     

黄芪成分F_3新制剂抗肿瘤的实验研究

[目的]研究黄芪成分F_3新制剂对荷瘤小鼠生存期及实体瘤生长抑制的影响。[方法]纯系Balb/c小鼠荷瘤后随机分组,连续用药10d,观察腹水荷瘤小鼠的生存时间;观察抑瘤率的小鼠于荷瘤第15d后处死,剥瘤称重。[结果]腹腔注射黄芪成分F_3新制剂能显著延长腹水荷瘤小鼠的生命延长率;对U_(14)、S_(180)实体瘤的抑瘤率分别达71.29％、70.97％。[结论]黄芪成分F_3新制剂对荷瘤小鼠具有显著的抑癌作用。     

Efficacy of topical honey therapy against silver sulphadiazine treatment in burns: A biochemical study

Thermal injury is associated with biochemical changes. The present study was undertaken to investigate relation of oxidative free radical generation and related biochemical parameters in burn trauma. The specific aim was to compare the levels of serum lipid peroxide, Ceruloplasmin and Uric Acid in burn patients during treatment with Silver Sulfadiazine Cream and honey therapy. It is a single blind prospective controlled study involving comparison of biochemical changes after treatment with silver sulfadiazine and honey treatment in burn injury. In burn trauma, there is excessive activity of free radicals at the site of injury. This is reflected in elevated blood levels of Lipid peroxide, Ceruloplasmin & Uric Acid. Honey therapy was was shown to decline the levels of serum Lipid peroxide, while there was mild increments in serum Ceruloplasmin levels whereas there was no significant effect on serum Uric Acid levels as compared to silver sulfadiazine treatment. Honey therapy seems to accelerate the process of healing. It has positive effect in reducing oxidative stressful state in burn trauma than the silver sulfadiazine treatment that results in rapid wound healing.
