This article develops the concept of ‘alternative cultural tourism’ through an in-depth study of the Prague Fringe Festival (PFF). In doing so, it argues that existing approaches to cultural tourism often fail to differentiate between different forms of culture (i.e. alternative versus mainstream), whilst also interrogating the criteria by which festivals can be understood as examples of alternative cultural tourism. Utilising a combination of both quantitative and qualitative data, involving audiences, festival performers and workers/volunteers, it is asserted that the PFF brings together a diverse mix of cultures, and seeks to create a more participatory and engaging tourist experience. Additionally, its more egalitarian organising structure produces different kinds of work and social relations in the production of art and culture – particularly between various groups working within the festival, but also in the creation of different ideas about audience engagement, performer relations, and engagement with the local community (through the idea of the ‘festival participant’). The article concludes by briefly exploring the potential of alternative cultural tourism to provide more meaningful and sustainable models of urban cultural development. 相似文献

The thermal conductivity of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, typically decreases when tensile strain is applied, which softens their phonon modes. Here, we report an anomalous strain effect on the thermal conductivity of monolayer silicene, a representative low-buckled two-dimensional (LB-2D) material. ReaxFF-based molecular dynamics simulations are performed to show that biaxially stretched monolayer silicene exhibits a remarkable increase in thermal conductivity, by as much as 10 times the freestanding value, with increasing applied strain in the range of [0, 0.1], which is attributed to increased contributions from long-wavelength phonons. A further increase in strain in the range of [0.11, 0.18] results in a plateau of the thermal conductivity in an oscillatory manner, governed by a unique dynamic bonding behavior under extreme loading. This anomalous effect reveals new physical insights into the thermal properties of LB-2D materials and may provide some guidelines for designing heat management and energy conversion devices based on such materials. 相似文献

Chemical bonding is one of the key and basic concepts in chemistry. The learning of many of the concepts taught in chemistry, in both secondary schools as well as in the colleges, is dependent upon understanding fundamental ideas related to chemical bonding. Nevertheless, the concept is perceived by teachers, as well as by learners, as difficult, with teaching commonly leading to students developing misconceptions. Many of these misconceptions result from over‐simplified models used in text books, by the use of traditional pedagogy that presents a rather limited and sometimes incorrect picture of the issues related to chemical bonding and by assessments of students' achievement that influence the way the topic is taught. In addition, there are discrepancies between scientists regarding key definitions in the topic and the most appropriate models to teach it. In particular, teaching models that are intended to have transitional epistemological value in introducing abstract ideas are often instead understood by students as accounts of ontological reality. In this review paper we provide science educators, curricula developers and pre‐service and in‐service professional development providers an up‐to‐date picture regarding research and developments in teaching about chemical bonding. We review the external and internal variables that might lead to misconceptions and the problematic issue of using limited teaching/learning models.
