Cognitive,Affective, Personality,and Demographic Predictors of Foreign-Language Achievement

Abstract

The ability of cognitive, affective, personality, and demographic variables to predict second-language acquisition among college students was investigated. An all possible subsets regression analysis was used to compare the proportion of variance in foreign-language achievement explained by each variable. The analysis revealed that variables from each of the 4 domains were important predictors of foreign-language achievement. Overall, academic achievement, as measured by GPA average, was the best predictor, explaining 11.5% of the variance in foreign-language achievement. Foreign-language anxiety, the next best predictor, explained 10.5% of the variance. The educational implications of these findings for understanding foreign-language achievement are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.     

Environmental literacy of youth movement members – is environmentalism a component of their social activism?

Youth-movements in Israel are non-formal organizations that educate for social and political involvement and provide a broad platform for youth involvement in the community. This study explored the question: does the social activism of adolescents who both elect for membership in youth movements and a leadership role of instructing younger members also reflect itself in environmentalism? In a survey of 1496 young instructors drawn from 15 official youth movements, findings on environmental literacy variables show youth are only generally knowledgeable about environmental problems; express ‘technical-optimism’ which leads them to limited concern for the environment; show limited recognition of the importance of environmental education, and show limited acknowledgment of the necessity for changes in personal consumerism. Findings also show that environmental issues are not on their mind since they are not a conversation topic with peers or family. Nonetheless, these youth also demonstrate strong self-efficacy to effect change; view themselves as role models for younger members; and express willingness to include environmentally-supportive activities within regular youth movement activities. Their valuing of nature also provides a foundation for building other environmental values. Further analysis shows how these findings can contribute theoretical and practical tools for incorporating sustainability within the youth movement framework, and help realize their potential for promoting sustainability in society.

A review on the basketball jump shot

The ability to shoot an effective jump shot in the sport of basketball is critical to a player's success. In an attempt to better understand the aspects related to expert performance, researchers have investigated successful free throws and jump shots of various basketball players and identified movement variables that contribute to their success. The purpose of this study was to complete a systematic review of the scientific literature on the basketball free throw and jump shot for the purpose of revealing the critical components of shooting that coaches, teachers, and players should focus on when teaching, learning, practising, and performing a jump shot. The results of this review are presented in three sections: (a) variables that affect ball trajectory, (b) phases of the jump shot, and (c) additional variables that influence shooting.

La influencia de variables cognitivas en el recuerdo de cuentos y su valoración en función de la edad

Resumen

Esta investigación analizó la memoria a través del recuerdo de cuentos bajo la manipulación de variables cognitivas en niños de 6, 8 y 10 años. Siguiendo la gramática de la historia según Stein y Glenn, se diseñaron tres cuentos sencillos con contenidos bien diferenciados. Cada historia poseía además dos finales (final feliz y final triste). Participaron un total de 108 niños y sus respuestas fueron registradas en un análisis factorial mixto con dos factores intersujetos (edad y sexo) y tres factores intrasujetos (contenido, final y categoría gramatical). Los resultados resaltan la importancia que el contenido ejerce no sólo en el recuerdo del mismo, sino también en los distintos finales presentados.     

管理实证研究中的统计控制误用分析及改进

在管理实证研究中,统计控制误用的情况尚未得到足够重视。解释了控制变量的概念和统计控制的应用原理,并分别分析了控制变量与理论构念或测量指标相关的情况下,统计控制对分析结果的影响。通过分析表明,当控制变量与理论构念相关时,常用的统计控制方式——分层回归分析所检验的并不是自变量对因变量的总解释度,而是在考虑控制变量的情况下增加解释度;而当控制变量与测量指标相关时,分层回归分析并不适用。针对以上问题,提出了相应的统计应对策略。
