Using Typical Infant Development to Inform Music Therapy with Children with Disabilities

This article illustrates some ways in which observations of typically-developing infants can inform music therapy and other work with children with disabilities. The research project that is described examines typical infant development with special attention to musical relatedness and communication. Videotapes of sessions centering on musical play with typically-developing infants and of music therapy sessions of children with multiple severe disabilities are examined in light of developmental issues, conceptual frameworks, and relationships between typical development and developmental issues of children with disabilities. Greenspan’s model of psychosocial development is used as a basis for analyzing observations. This research was conducted over a period of several years. Portions of what is reported here were presented at the European Music Therapy Congress, Naples, Italy (Wheeler and Stultz 2001) and the 10th World Congress of Music Therapy, Oxford, UK (Wheeler and Stultz 2002). Attention‐Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms,Perceived Stress,and Resilience in College Students

This research investigated the relationships among symptoms associated with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), perceived stress, and resilience in college students. In our study of 558 college students (175 men, 383 women), we confirmed the hypothesis that the relationship between ADHD symptoms and perceived stress is mediated by protective factors associated with resilience. The relationships were not significantly moderated by sex. Implications for increasing resilience in college students and lowering perceived stress for college students are discussed.     

“关关雎鸠”考释

“关关雎鸠”是以雎鸠鸟的雌雄和鸣,兴起“乐得淑女以配君子”的主题。这种说法,不仅渊源有自,且亦可由《关雎》一诗的音乐性质得以证明。认为此句是以鱼鹰求鱼象征男子向女子求爱的观点,其实未必能够成立。《关雎》诗以本句起兴,取义有二：一以春季物候兴发婚姻主题,二则以雎鸠之“挚而有别”兴发婚姻之性质。其内容和音乐都吻合西周之端肃典正的礼乐精神。

情绪的ERP研究新进展

ERP技术是研究情绪问题的有效手段 ,实验对象包括正常被试以及心境障碍的病人 .可从视觉或 和听觉通道给予情绪刺激材料 ,观察P1、N1和P30 0等ERP成分的变化 .研究发现 ,情绪可增强被试对情绪事件的注意强度 ,尤其是新异的情绪内容较易得到识别 .在正常被试中 ,情绪词相较中性词能引起较大的新旧效应 ,抑郁症患者的新旧效应与正常人有所不同 ,但其再认成绩也能被情绪内容提高 .在研究情绪对决策行为的影响时 ,观察到内侧额叶负波 (MFN) .ERP研究表明 ,情绪活动也存在大脑功能的偏侧化效应 .

Systemic and paradigmatic problems inherent in science instruction are a genuine threat to our health, and that of future generations. By examining the discoveries of two unsung heroes of 20th century medical science, and the poor acceptance of their dietary interventions in disease processes, we have sufficient evidence to incite a careful re-evaluation and alteration of the methods with which we teach science, and, in fact, all subject areas in our schools and postsecondary institutions. F.C. Dohan and W. Dicke each discovered answers to pathologies through dietary exclusion of gluten. Neither has enjoyed the just fruits of their labours.
