Previous research related to occupational socialization theory has indicated that, in certain school contexts, physical education (PE) and physical education teachers are socially constructed as being less important than, or marginal to, the primary purpose of schooling. This research highlights the challenges associated with occupying a position of marginality. Another way to look at the social experiences of physical education teachers is to examine the extent to which they feel as if they matter to those around them. Drawing upon qualitative and quantitative data sources, the purpose of this study was to examine physical education teachers’ perceived mattering. A mixed-methods design was employed, and data sources included responses to an online survey (N?=?105) and individual telephone interviews (N?=?23). Quantitative data were analyzed using 2?×?2 (education?×?teaching level) Factorial MANOVA; interview data were analyzed using analytic induction and constant comparison. Quantitative analyses indicated that teachers with advanced degrees and those in secondary schools perceived a higher level of mattering than those with bachelor’s degrees and teaching in elementary schools. Respondents perceived that PE mattered slightly more than they did as teachers of the subject. Qualitative analysis indicated that (a) relationships were critical to teachers’ mattering, (b) physical location of the gym and isolation contributed to mattering, and (c) PE was viewed as a service to others in their workplace. Perceived matter is dependent upon a variety of factors related to both personal and workplace factors. Enhancing teachers’ perceptions of mattering may reduce feelings of marginalization.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Physical education teacher education programs have a responsibility to prepare preservice teachers in the technical aspects of teaching while also preparing them for the sociopolitical realities of teaching a marginalized subject. There is also a need for inservice teachers to engage in continuing professional development related to socialization and school sociopolitics to build upon lessons learned during initial teacher education. In the United States, one such professional development opportunity is reflected in master’s degree programs. These programs are typically guided by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education advanced standards for physical education teacher education. However, these standards do not currently have any reference to socialization or sociopolitical learning. The purpose of this article is to propose that an additional standard focusing on sociopolitical skills and teacher socialization be added to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education advanced standards for U.S.-based post-licensure master’s degree programs.  相似文献

This paper is one of the attempts to show how each East‐Asian regional country’s memory of the war has been related to the post‐war literatures and movies restricted by the structure of the Cold War. In particular, this paper takes up the issue of how the structure of Japanese culture after World War II was heavily influenced by the Cold War. When Japan was under the Occupational Forces, Japanese writers and film directors settling on the subject matter of the war were not free from the strain of the systematic censorship by GHQ. Translating into mechanisms of their works using the body or woman (comfort woman) by squarely facing the facts of the East‐Asian history, this paper reconsiders the body of post‐colonial Japan.  相似文献

入职期是新教师专业成长的关键期,及时发现并有效解决乡村小学新任教师的入职适应问题有助于他们尽快地适应岗位工作,担负起乡村基础教育的重任。文章依据教师专业发展阶段理论和教师适应性绩效理论,通过现状调查、专家咨询等方式,从心理适应、生存适应、文化适应、人际适应与专业适应五个维度构建了乡村小学新任教师入职适应评价指标,并进行了小范围测试,通过 SPSS AU检测得知预测试问卷的信度和效度较高。该评价指标体系可为乡村小学新任教师入职适应研究提供科学有效的测量工具,及时发现教师的入职适应问题,帮助他们尽快适应教师职业,推进乡村教师队伍建设,提高乡村教育质量。  相似文献

本研究采用《中学教师职业压力调查问卷》为研究工具,抽取广东省319名中学体育教师进行了调查,结果表明:58%的被调查者认为中学体育教师是一种压力"较大"或"很大"的职业,中学体育教师的主要压力源体现在:工作负荷、自我发展需要、学生因素和职业期望等四个方面,教师在性别、职称、年龄、任教年级和所在地区上的压力存在显著差异。  相似文献

There is growing interest by governments, industry, students and employers in providing tertiary education students with experiences in practice settings (i.e., workplaces) and then integrating those experiences into their educational programs. Yet, the bases for organising and securing such integrations remain unclear. There are quite diverse explanatory accounts about what constitutes such integrations and, therefore, how they might be best enacted and supported within tertiary education. These accounts often differ through their privileging of particular emphases in their conceptualisations. One emphasis is on the qualities and characteristics of each physical and social setting (i.e., workplace and tertiary educational institution) and their potential contributions to students’ learning, and reconciling what arises from experiences in each of these settings. Another privileges individuals as meaning makers and their reconciliation of what they experiences in these settings. Advanced here is an account that acknowledges and reconciles these two emphases. This explanatory account comprising a duality that emphasises both what each setting affords students, on the one hand, and, on the other, how learners elect to engage, construe and construct from each setting and then reconcile those experiences as directed by their interests, capacities and cognitive experience. This socio-personal explanation is supported by literature emphasising the contributions between the mediations of social and physical world, and individuals’ construing and construction of them, but also the relations amongst them. Having discussed this account as a means to understand the process of integrating those experiences, some considerations of curriculum, pedagogy and epistemological factors are advanced.  相似文献

Communication theory is ideally suited to advance systematic forms of knowledge about workplace safety. The focus of this research is to examine workplace safety using health communication theory and research. A field study using a random sample of production workers (n=645) in a manufacturing organization was conducted, to investigate individuals’ risk perception and efficacy beliefs and to validate the predictions of the risk perception attitude framework. Results were consistent with the theory, as risk and efficacy jointly predicted safety behavior, behavioral intentions, and safety information-seeking intentions. Given a particular level of risk, those with greater efficacy beliefs displayed more positive safety outcomes than those with lower efficacy beliefs. The responsive group (high risk, high efficacy) reported safer outcomes than the avoidant group (high risk, low efficacy) and the proactive group (low risk, high efficacy) reported safer outcomes than the indifferent group (low risk, low efficacy). This theoretical frame provides practical directions as to what shapes the safety behaviors and communication patterns of workers in dangerous jobs and offers insights for safety information-seeking and workplace safety.  相似文献
