The Bachelor: Whiteness in the Harem

This examination of the representation of whiteness and women of color in the reality-based television series The Bachelor shows how the series is “raced.” It is a context in which only white people find romantic partners, a process that women of color work to facilitate. The Westernized trope of the Eastern harem structures The Bachelor, duplicating in the series the imperialist, Orientalist, and oppressive racist premises of the harem trope.

该文运用Edward Said的刻板东方主义的观点,论述黄哲伦在《蝴蝶君》中如何成功颠覆了对东方女性和西方男性关系的刻板印象。白人绅士伽利默一生追求想象中的如蝴蝶夫人般的完美东方女性,为此幻想而生,又为此幻想而死。极具讽刺意义的是,他到死才认识到,真正的蝴蝶夫人不是他幻想中的宋丽玲,而是现实中的自己。     

Is Japanese education the “exception”?: examining the situated articulation of neo-liberalism through the analysis of policy keywords

This article builds on the author's earlier work, published in Vol. 28 No. 1 of this journal, that critiqued the Orientalist legacy in Anglo-American discussions of Japanese education. One of the manifestations of this legacy is the prevailing view among the Anglo-American observers of Japanese education that Japanese education is the “exception” to the recent global restructuring movement. This article problematizes this view by exposing a similar but differently articulated structural change in Japanese education over the past three decades. Drawing on cultural studies and critical discourse analysis, the author focuses on the two policy keywords that the Ministry of Education has consistently used by for the past three decades: kosei (individuality) and yutori (low pressure). Tracing the complex histories of articulation and rearticulation of these policy keywords, the author demonstrates how the keywords, which had been associated with progressive political struggles against the Ministry's central control of public education, were mobilized to reconstitute people's common sense about education and thus to naturalize the radical systemic change towards the neo-liberal, post-welfare settlement. In conclusion, the author discusses the implication of the study to the field of comparative and international education, calling for a more critical, reflexive engagement with the field's preoccupation with “national differences”.

西方国家对中国的文化说教由来已久,罗伯·科恩（Rob·Cohen）导演的《木乃伊3：龙帝之墓》立足于东方主义思想基础,以温和的表象、基督教般的仁慈说教,用和中国文化套近乎的方式,不仅期望获得商业利润和票房价值,更是以上帝的名义对中国文化进行一场温和的西方主义“教育”。这是对中国文化的一种误解和曲解,更是对中国文化进行的一种隐蔽侵略。     

多元文化时代的“东西”形象之颠覆与重构——论谭恩美《沉默之鱼》的人物塑造

在自己全新突破的作品《沉默之鱼》中,谭恩美客观真实地描述了东方异域风光及文化,尤其对人物的具体塑造颇有深意,对东方之人物形象偏向正面描绘,而对白人之人物形象的刻画却充满批判讽刺。她用自己诙谐幽默的语言通过把异质文化之间的差异、矛盾和碰撞艺术地展现在读者面前,自我建构重塑东方人之形象,有效地反击了＂东方论述＂,同时颠覆改变白人之形象,积极地消解了＂白人优越论＂,表征了多元文化共存的文学诉求。     

东方主义探究

文章通过对美国学者爱德华·塞义德的《东方学》的分析,剖析西方人的“东方主义”情结。文章指出东方主义在本体论和认知论的关系上是矛盾的,“东方主义”是西方人为了自己的利益而虚构的一整套关于东方的形象。在当今全球化的语境下,必须消解东西方二元对立的思想,才能建构新的和谐的东西方关系．为世界的和平做出贡献。     

Cross-dressing as whitewashing: the Kimono Wednesdays protests and the erasure of Asian/American bodies

ABSTRACT

During the summer of 2015, a series of events at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston called Kimono Wednesdays encouraged visitors to try on a replica of the kimono Claude Monet's wife wore in her husband's 1876 painting La Japonaise and then pose for photos in front of the painting. This seemingly benign act of appreciation sparked protests from those who considered the events as perpetuating an exoticizing imperialist gaze and orientalizing stereotypes. This paper contextualizes this controversy by examining the history of white women cross-dressing as Japanese, how it constitutes a form of naturalized whitewashing linked to the pleasure of consumption through its connections to Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado (1885), and how the same act for Asian American women at the turn into the twentieth century is fraught with the anxiety of racial identity suppression.     

Out of Asia: learning re-examined,teacher education re-configured

The impetus for this argumentative paper is anecdotal evidence overheard in West Australian educational settings indicating that there continues to be “othering” of learners from Asian backgrounds. Exploring prevailing Western social, theoretical and educational discourses associated with Asia, the author argues that teacher education in Western Australia be reconceptualized in three main ways. Firstly, levels of meta-cultural sensitivity in pre-service and in-service educators should be ascertained. Secondly, there needs to be a more rigorous theoretical and conceptual framework for pre-service/in-service teacher education informed by cross-cultural, historical knowledge and awareness of the social and personal constructions of reality – views of the “other” and “self”. Thirdly, teacher education courses must offer opportunities to examine current developments in educational research which encourage reconceptualization and replacement of traditional East/West dichotomies. The paper aims to review literature related to theoretical Thirdness as an ontological, educational principle and to contribute to Thirdness discourse by situating the argument in a particular context in Western Australia. It is hoped that papers such as this may lead to more informed and symmetrical dialogue between educators in the Asia Pacific region.

So this paper probes "The Other" in several aspects.

全球化背景下,文学翻译研究渐渐聚焦于文化认同和文化身份构建,同时,文学翻译作为一种跨文化交流活动,在国家政治与民族交流当中的意义日益凸显。本文从东方主义视角出发,分析外国译者对中国文学作品的翻译受到译者本身文化身份的束缚,他们的汉英文学翻译中出现的错译与误译在一定程度上影响了中国文化的身份构建。
