Deconstruction as Narrative Interruption

Because of the way it prioritizes interruption and calls into question the very possibility of producing coherent, selfcontained narratives, the deconstructive work of Jacques Derrida is often thought to be intrinsically anti-narrative in its very structure; and yet there are those who insist that, to the contrary, deconstruction is a narrative exercise through and through. I maintain that both interpretive approaches fall prey to a serious misunderstanding of deconstruction. I will show that deconstruction should be viewed neither as a simple affirmation nor negation of narrative but rather as a radical perplexity in the face of narrative. Indeed, any serious engagement with deconstruction requires that we call into question the very nature, function, and limits of narrative practice.

Paul F-Brandwein Lecture 2006: Conservation Education for the 21st Century and Beyond

This paper explores Paul Brandwein’s contribution to the concept of conservation education in America. It examines the evolution of the concept to today’s environmental education. It then identifies some of the weaknesses of current environmental education and presents ideas on how to move past them to a point where conservation education is integrated into every classroom discipline, which brings conservation closer to Brandwein’s concept of conservation education to create a sanative environment. The paper looks at place-based learning as a step in that direction, giving several examples. It concludes with the 24 scientifically based conservation concepts compiled by the Society for Conservation Biology that can serve as curriculum for the 21st Century and beyond.     

Analysis of volatile components in a Chinese fish sauce, Fuzhou Yulu, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Volatile components of Fuzhou Yulu, a Chinese fish sauce, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and two pretreatment methods, i.e., purge and trap (P&T) GC-MS and ethyl acetate extraction followed by GC-MS, were compared. P&T-GC-MS method determined 12 components, including sulfur-containing constituents (such as dimethyl disulfide), nitrogen-containing constituents (such as pyrazine derivatives), aldehydes and ketones. Ethyl ace tate extraction fol-lowed by GC-MS method detected 10 components, which were mainly volatile organic acids (such as benzenepropanoic acid) and esters. Neither of the two methods detected alcohols or trimethylamine. This study offers an important reference to determine volatile flavor components of traditional fish sauce through modem analysis methods.     

Enamel insert restorations on Limoges painted enamels: A study on a remarkable nineteenth-century restoration technique with particular attention to the original paillon designs

Two sixteenth-century Limoges painted enamel plaques by Léonard Limosin in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, show a remarkable restoration technique consisting of separately enameled pieces that have been inserted into areas where original enamel was lost. A detailed investigation of the two plaques brought information about this former restoration method and the materials used. Investigation included optical microscopy, UV-A examination, and X-radiography for identification and mapping of the insert restorations, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy for analyzing organic restoration material as well as X-ray fluorescence for studying the enamel compositions. A survey of six other Limoges painted enamel collections in the USA was carried out, which revealed many more of these insert restorations and indicated particular damages related to the so-called paillon designs on silver or gold foils. A literature review was undertaken focusing on possible causes of the damage as well as on persons and workshops that may have executed the insert restorations.

安徽省高校高水平运动员文化建设研究

运用文献资料、专家访谈、问卷调查等研究方法对安徽省高校招收的高水平运动队进行调查研究,结果显示:文化课成绩相对较好的运动员的运动成绩和运动等级要低一些,运动成绩和等级较高者,文化课成绩相对较低;有16.9%的学生在学业期间有重修而不能按时毕业,无法走上社会谋得职业;建议高校应以生为本,建立"补漏"式文化学习机制,转变教练员的唯"运动成绩至上"观,以切实提高高水平运动员的文化素养.

面向专利预警的专利申请关键特征研究

近年来,专利陷阱及后续的专利诉讼对技术创新的影响日益凸显,应对这一态势的重要手段是专利预警。专利申请书是最早公开的专利文献,以此为突破口,对申请书的特征字段进行分析,构建申请特征与专利诉讼的回归模型;研究表明,权利要求数、引用专利数和技术宽度与专利诉讼发生概率有显著的正向关系,是与专利诉讼密切相关的关键特征。因此,针对目标技术领域的相关专利,可以此回归模型为定量分析工具,筛选出易引发诉讼的高风险专利,从而利用最早公开的申请信息开展专利预警。
