“厌女症”是指文学作品中存在的歪曲、贬低女性形象的表征,并把一切罪过都推到女性头上的情绪或主题。《伊库斯》是当代英国剧作家彼得·谢弗最优秀的剧作之一。在《伊库斯》中,彼得·谢弗表现出明显的厌女症倾向,具体体现为塑造的女性形象传统刻板,把责任和问题归咎于女性以及贬低女性的智慧,认为男女之间在灵魂和肉体上都无法沟通。

《孙子兵法》是中华军事文化的经典之作,是最具海外影响力的中国典籍之一。其英译史漫长、英译本众多,近年来仍不断有新译本问世。新西兰汉学家彼得·哈里斯(Peter Harris)的《孙子兵法》英译本于2018年3月在美国、加拿大和英国同时出版,是海外《孙子兵法》的最新译作;该译本有美国军界高官作序,在一定程度上也代表了西方对《孙子兵法》的最新认知;其底本选择颇具严谨性,具有现代性特征;其编排方法能够满足不同读者的需求,体现了译者的细致入微和读者意识。但该译本也存在对中美关系认识不足和对原文理解错误、选词不当、表达不完整、文化特有词汇翻译欠妥等问题。研究包括哈里斯译本在内的海外《孙子兵法》英译本,能够了解西方对该典籍的认知与解读,补正其偏差,避免其对中国传统文化的扭曲和误解。     

Embracing the humanistic vision: Recurrent themes in Peter Roberts’ recent writings

Running like a leitmotif through Peter Roberts’ recently published philosophico-educational writings there is a humanistic thread, which this article picks out. In order to ascertain the quality of this humanism, Roberts is positioned in relation to a pair of extant humanisms: radical and integral. Points of comparability and contrast are identified in several of the writer’s genre-crossing essays. These texts, it is argued, rectify deficiencies in how the two humanisms envision alternatives to capitalism. Roberts skilfully teases out the non-obvious futurological implications of the work of a diverse array of authors, spanning the boundaries of philosophy, social criticism, and literature. In so doing, he underscores the intimate connection between personal self-transformation and ideal-driven social transformation. Further, Roberts challenges humanists of both radical and integral stripes to reconsider the moral grounds of their critique of capitalism.

SUMMARY

Disaster response is largely about managing people. Human failings and vice can delay or derail library and archives recovery activities, causing irreparable damage to irreplaceable cultural property. Peter Waters' seven requirements for conducting successful disaster recoveries are contrasted with the Seven Deadly Sins to demonstrate the timeless nature of subversive factors at work in the disaster domain. Disaster planning is recommended as an indispensable alternative to running in circles.     

Italian technical literature in the field of architectural restoration: The case study of the Historic Memories about the Vatican Church by Giovanni Poleni

This paper provides a theoretical, methodological, and practical contribution to the debate about strategies for the divulgation of the Italian technical literature of the eighteenth century in English-speaking countries with attention to the Italian universities and cultural institutions of the time. The paper contains a survey of the historical bibliography of contemporary translations of non-technical treatises of architecture in the English language and it proceeds to draw up a set of guidelines (decalogue) of different recently proposed methodologies and strategies. It describes the selection of the treatise to translate, relevant to the context and authoritative knowledge in the European scientific background of the eighteenth century; it continues by proposing a synopsis of the original text in the Italian modern language, a strategy used in order to make historical technical treatises accessible to the contemporary scientific Italian language. Approaches and strategies are experimented with in the case study of Historic Memories about the Great Dome of the Vatican Church (Le Memorie Istoriche della Gran Cupola Vaticana) by Giovanni Poleni, one of the most authoritative scholars of eighteenth-century Europe.
