当代美国犹太作家菲利普·罗斯的“凯普什系列”小说通过其人物有违自身社会地位和族裔身份的形象展现出强烈的反叛色彩,该系列中《欲望教授》和《乳房》两部早期创作的情节高度关联的小说通过身体变形、心理变形和身份变形三种人物的自我变形范式建构其自我反叛形象,映照并隐喻传统犹太神秘体系中的灵魂转生观点,反映出二战过后的数十年内,美国社会个体人物所面临的精神危机、身份危机和丧失自由的危机等深刻社会意蕴。

中国清代文学作品《沙弥思老虎》和意大利文艺复兴时期的作品《腓力与绿鹅》产生的时代相去甚远,但内容和思想内涵却极为相似,即都极力反对封建社会所提倡的禁欲主义。这与两部作品产生的相似的时代背景密切相关,也一定程度上体现了文学创作活动共有的通律。“老虎”和“绿鹅”的称谓反映出中西封建社会中的妇女均受人歧视,社会地位低下,但两者内涵的差异却隐晦地反映出中西封建社会中妇女地位的差异。     

Responding to the legitimacy problems of big tobacco: An analysis of the “people of Philip Morris” image advertising campaign

This study integrates the theories of organizational legitimacy and image restoration/repair. The need for and challenges to legitimacy establish the reason organizations undertake image repair discourse. The People of Philip Morris campaign is examined as an example of this integration. The image repair strategies Philip Morris uses indicate that it is trying to deflect attention away from tobacco‐related issues by focusing on the corporate character reflected in its philanthropic deeds. The legitimacy defense and image repair campaign would be more effective and ethical if they focused on tobacco issues and corrective actions taken in response to them.     

Search time and test anxiety in a visual location task

This study was conducted to investigate whether increasing search time in a visual location task would result in significantly different relationships between worry/emotionality test anxiety component scores and performance. Fifty graduate students were given 3.5 or 8 s to locate seven embedded geometrical figures projected on a screen. Correlation coefficients (anxiety component scores X performance scores) for the two treatment groups were significantly different for the emotionality component, r = ? .73 (3.5 s), r = ? .06 (8 s), z(r) = 2.8, p < .01; but not for the worry component, r = ? .61 (3.5 s), r = ? .26 (8 s). Recommendations include further study utilizing actual classroom situations and commercial instructional materials. Tentative recommendations for the production and utilization of instructional materials are provided.

Paradise Lost and Found: Obedience, Disobedience, and Storytelling in C. S. Lewis and Philip Pullman

In the fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia and His Dark Materials, by C. S. Lewis and Philip Pullman respectively, the authors use symbols and themes from Paradise Lost. Each author's narrative choice uses his view of cosmic order to persuade readers that obedience should be understood as central to coming of age. At stake is the proper role of human agency in the world. Can children become narrators of their own lives, or are they fated simply to occupy narratives already written for them? Obedience and disobedience are inextricably connected with narratives of origin, of development, and of maturation. Both Lewis and Pullman model and problematize the process of independent storytelling in order to arrive at truth; their treatments of obedience and disobedience explore each writer's sense of the nature of authority, storytelling, and the creative process.
