Public Libraries as Rhetorical Devices: Reimagining Print,Dewey, and Memory as Invention in the Digital Age

This article frames the public library and its system of organization as rhetorical tools. By providing an historic overview of libraries and their formation, the author recognizes the severed connection between library systems and the field of rhetoric, specifically the rhetorical canon of memoria. He seeks to reconnect memoria to the public library by recognizing the place-based nature of both classical memoria and library classification systems. The implications, he contends, run deep in libraries as seemingly neutral entities shape collective memory and education. Finally, the author provides a section that focuses on how digital-age libraries could be shaped, maintained, and managed in a way that recognizes memory as a rhetorical tool that aids in knowledge formation.

普通高校图书馆集成系统问卷调查及启示

为更好地了解国内高校图书馆自动化系统的使用情况,并为CALIS四期开发下一代图书馆自动化系统提供研究报告,课题组通过问卷调查的方式,收集了集成系统总体使用情况、使用满意度以及未来使用计划等三个方面的第一手数据;通过数据分析,得出结论,并为CALIS四期开发面向普通高校和高职高专图书馆的下一代ILS提出建议。     

Classroom Emotional Support predicts differences in preschool children's cortisol and alpha-amylase levels

Accumulating evidence suggests children enrolled in full-time child care often display afternoon elevations of the hormone cortisol, which is an indicator of stress. Recent advances in immunoassays allow for measurement of activity in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and the autonomic sympathetic nervous system from saliva, and measurement of both systems provides a more complete understanding of activity in the stress response system. This study is the first to examine both cortisol and alpha-amylase in children attending child care and focuses on the influences of specific indicators of classroom process quality. A diverse sample of 63 preschool children nested in 14 classrooms of varying quality participated in this study; child salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase were collected at six times over 2 days. Results indicate that children in classrooms with higher Emotional Support displayed a greater decline in cortisol from morning to afternoon. Further, children in classrooms with higher Emotional Support exhibited lower total alpha-amylase output while attending child care. Implications for professional development for early childhood teachers and measurement of classroom quality are discussed.

Creative Thinking in the Classroom

The article discusses how current changes in the system of reasoning about education in Finland, Iceland and Sweden are characterised by culturally woven patterns where marketisation strategies, for instance budget reform, are introduced as technically effective devices both for educating the best and to increase inclusion. This system of reason presupposes that the neo-liberalist restructuring changes are inevitable global phenomena and that they are a progress compared with the old arrangements, but is silent about socio-economic issues and the equity goals of the 1960s-1980s. The article also argues that school-based self-evaluation as a practice and as a language is a normalising technique that ensures that school actors will identify the obstacles encountered in the restructuring transition so that neither state nor other authorities intervene.     

A rising tide of primary school standards—The role of data systems in improving equitable access for all to quality education in Vietnam

The approach taken over the past decade to introduce minimum primary school standards in Vietnam is reviewed, with annual school audits that measured both input (quality) and output indicators.

本文设计和实现的中医方药嵌入式系统旨在建立和完善证候和方药之间的关系,改善中医临床和教学在辨证分类与方剂选用之间存在的脱节情况,改善中医药知识的传播和交流方式。系统采用嵌入式技术和移动数据库技术,在中心服务器为中医药知识的积累和传播提供平台,采用合并复制和远程数据访问技术,实现中心服务器与PDA设备和中医师桌面信息的同步,实现证、方、药的学习查询和辅助开方系统。
