The Rhetorical Limits of Satire: An Analysis of James Finn Garner's Politically Correct Bedtime Stories

By July 1994, Politically Correct Bedtime Stories had appeared for the third time on the New York Times bestseller list with sales exceeding 100,000 copies. One year later, there were almost 1.5 million copies of Politically Correct Bedtime Stories in print as it continued to excite public commentary. This popular book is an ideal case study for exploring the benefits and limits of satiric humor, the book's primary rhetorical strategy and the focus of this essay. We argue that because of its polyvalent nature, the use of ironic satire as a rhetorical strategy to debunk a position is unpredictable. In fact, as this essay demonstrates, some forms of humor may facilitate audience acceptance of the very ideas the satirist intends to disparage. In this case, Garner's use of satiric humor may have facilitated acceptance of moderate forms of political correctness.     

Selective News Exposure,Personal Values,and Support for the Iraq War

News media coverage of the Iraq war plays a significant role in informing the public about the war event itself. This study examined whether exposure to different news sources had an impact on the public's opinion on the war starting from the initial military-action phase through the early postwar period. It also explored how the public's patriotic values, political orientations, and religious convictions influenced the relations between their news source exposure and support for (or opposition to) the war.     

基于动态面板数据的中国农村居民消费的研究

本文通过构建农村居民消费与收入之间的动态面板数据模型,将全国30个省、市的数据分成低、中等、高收入三个阶层,利用1997～2011年的面板数据对三个阶层地区农村居民的消费进行实证分析。结果表明,全国不同收入地区的农村居民消费存在着一定程度的消费习惯;农村居民的家庭经营性收入和工资性收入对居民的消费支出起着决定性的作用,财产性收入和转移性收入在不同地区的农村居民消费中起着不同的作用。

基于一种新型海水液压泵的动力学分析

通过对海水泵系统等效力学模型的构建,描绘出系统从启动到停止全部三个过程海水泵系统的动力随时间变化的规律。建立以回转运动的斜盘为等效构件,以斜盘的摆角作为广义坐标求解所得出的等效转动惯量与等效力矩所构成的等效力学模型,进行动力特性分析。并通过等效构件有效地将整个系统动力特性折算到等效构件上,求解出三个阶段海水泵系统的动力特性。

Face[book] Management: Self-Presentation of Political Views on Social Media

This study explores Facebook users’ management behaviors related to their—and their friends'—political communication via social media, utilizing the concepts of context collapse and self-presentation. A new two-factor measure of Facebook management was developed, pilot tested (N = 139) and implemented in a survey utilizing a national sample (N = 352) of individuals aged 18–29. Results indicated Facebook users are not generally engaging in the strategic management of political disclosures or the political content to which they are exposed. However, as network sizes increase, participants engage in more disclosure behaviors and make greater efforts to manage content exposure. Additionally, participants with strong political beliefs engage in more Facebook management behaviors, possibly indicating an effort to limit cognitive dissonance.
