Assessing the Benefits of Content Notes Enhancements for Digital Audio Resources

Our library has previously investigated the potential impact the addition of contents notes on circulation. In a subsequent study, we found contents notes were the second metadata element most heavily linked to circulation (title was first). Since there has been a marked decline in the use of print resources at our library and a corresponding increase in digital resources, we wanted to know if the addition of contents notes to records for online streaming audio files would result in a similar increase in usage. After enhancing the records, we tracked usage for a period of three months.     

The Formation of Swedish Media Studies, 1960–1980

Around 1960, the politics of the emerging media society in Sweden tended to fixate the formative functions of mass communication. The monopoly of public service broadcast media, press subsidies and new tendencies in film policy were some of the issues around which uncertainty prevailed. New methods to provide reliable data were sought by politicians, since empirical facts were required as arguments for an updated media policy. This article examines the different ways that the field of media studies was introduced in Sweden between 1960 and 1980. We argue that Swedish academic media studies departed from, and emerged within, a rather diffuse borderland between industry, politics and academia. The formation of national media research in Sweden can partly be seen as an effect of politicians and the media industry wanting to be better informed on issues such as media influence, media ownership and the habits and composition of the media audience.     

Nurturing Authority

When considering the role of local journalism in a networked media environment, it is crucial to examine how audiences attribute news with the power to define social knowledge. In particular, television news programs need to appeal to audiences by reinforcing a sense of local journalistic authority to assert the parameters of who and what is worthy of coverage. This article presents the findings from interviews with a range of commercial television news viewers in Sydney, Australia. It positions viewership in the context of people’s wider engagement with news, and in relation to their interpersonal and digital social interactions. The paper argues that local audiences have conflicting attitudes to the role of television news, both contesting and re-inscribing the programs with the power to demarcate social, political, and cultural knowledge. It traces how local audiences challenge the ability of news to convey boundaries within the community through processes of exclusion, connecting the contestations to the lived experiences of the individuals. It identifies that television news programs nurture journalistic authority in terms of their local relevance, and it contributes insights on the significance of local news by engaging with the means by which audiences themselves attach social power to journalism.     

Hello,Friend: Cybersecurity Issues in Season One of Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot is a cyber-thriller television show that premiered on USA Network during the summer of 2015. Apart from quickly becoming a cult hit, the show was lauded for accurately portraying hacker culture. The goal of this article is to isolate three specific cybersecurity issues that recur through the first season of Mr. Robot: personal cybersecurity, corporate cybersecurity, and remote access Trojans; and to determine what laws the characters are in violation of as well as recent case law that can be applied to them.     

聋生心理健康状况的初步调查

为了探查聋生的心理健康状况,本研究采用《心理健康诊断测验》(MHT)对重庆市180名聋生进行了测量。结果发现:聋生的心理健康总体状况良好;男生的心理健康状况优于女生,城市学生的心理健康状况优于乡村学生,从五年级到高二聋生的心理健康水平呈M状发展;聋生的学习焦虑和过敏倾向较普通学生为轻,而孤独倾向较普通学生为重。     

泉州湾湿地保护与生产活动的冲突和协调发展

阐述了泉州湾河口湿地生物多样性价值及其保护对泉州近海环境的重要意义,但近年来人类活动的频繁干扰,如滩涂湿地过度养殖,工程建设占用湿地,海水污染,外来有害物种的蔓延使河口湿地逐渐退化,生物多样性减少,解决泉州湾河口湿地生产与保护的冲突应本着“善用湿地”这一宗,建立国家有自然保护区并成立相应的管理机构加强立法执法力度,恢复重建红树林群落,将养殖规模控制在理论规划范围内,严格控制污染源及加大对保护区的经济投入等。     

To Plan,or Not to Plan,Is There Even a Question? A Select Annotated Bibliography of Urban Studies Periodicals Focused on Planning

A bibliography of periodicals focused on planning within the urban studies field is presented. The bibliography contains scholarly, trade, and popular titles. Each entry contains identical categories of information (where each category is applicable), including an annotation. The bibliography is meant to aid in collection development in this subject area.     

Comparing Digital Apples and Oranges: A Comparative Analysis of e-Books Across Multiple Platforms

This session reported the findings of a comparative analysis of how e-books are represented across multiple platforms. In this session, the presenters shared the results of a study that examined how a sample of academic e-books are represented across different platforms. Topics of analysis included: the inclusion of various metadata, the visual presentation of e-book content, and variations in search results. This presentation also focused on the similarities and differences between e-book representation and what impact these various representations might have on users of academic e-books.     

Early Literacy and the Public Library: An Opportunity of a Lifetime (of Reading)

In this article, author Bill Ptacek says that the future is now, and, at least from the 1970s through today, in the field of early childhood work, the future has come so fast that it is constantly upon us. That reality means that those concerned about young children in libraries have been about adaptation on a continuing basis. In this world of rapid change, innovation is constant: City firefighters come to the libraries in uniform to read stories to children, library outreach specialists take programs to daycare centers in their communities, and staff members create a space in a library devoted to early childhood reading. This tradition of rapid change means that the early childhood staff of most large public libraries in North America is changing for the future on a regular basis. The work unit should be considered seriously as one model for 21st century public library reform.
