Religious disengagement and stigma management by African-American young adults

This study examines religious disengagement among African-American young adults through a communicative lens. Drawing on in-depth interviews, we unpack the tensions between organizational and institutional disengagement in participants’ accounts and trace the relational factors shaping their use of specific stigma management strategies. Participants’ religious disengagement unfolded through encounters with new information that contradicted institutional teachings, ongoing struggles with institutional ideologies they found problematic, localized conflicts with specific church experiences, and family circumstances. Stigma management strategies were chosen to keep the peace within their social circles, protect loved ones from being hurt, care for themselves to ensure their best and most authentic self, defend themselves from perceived attacks and social censure, and come to a mutual understanding with confidants about disengagement. Theoretical implications pertaining to religious membership, organizational vis-à-vis institutional disengagement, and stigma management were discussed, along with practical recommendations to empower congregants to grow spiritually.

Growing up female and Muslim in the UK: an empirical enquiry into the distinctive religious and social values of young Muslims

Abstract

What does it mean to be a Muslim young woman in Britain today and with which religious and social values do these young women identify? This paper tests the thesis that Muslim identity predicts distinctive values of public and social significance among female adolescents (13- to 15- years of age) who participated in a survey conducted across the four nations of the United Kingdom. From the 11,809 participants in the survey, the present analyses compares the responses of 177 female students who self-identified as Muslim with the responses of 1183 female students who self-identified as religiously unaffiliated. Comparisons are drawn across two domains defined as religiosity and as social values. The data demonstrated that for these female adolescents self-identification as Muslim encased a distinctive profile in terms both of religiosity and social values.     

基于混合深度信念网络的多类文本表示与分类方法

本文开展了基于混合深度信念网络的多类文本表示与分类方法的研究,以解决传统的Bag-of-Words（BOW）表示方法忽略文本语义信息、特征提取存在高维度高稀疏的问题。文章基于文本关键字,针对多类的分类任务（如新闻文本和生物医学文本）,以关键字的词向量表示作为文本输入,同时结合深度信念网络（Deep Belief Network,DBN）和深度玻尔兹曼机网络（Deep Boltzmann Machine, DBM）,设计了一种混合深度信念网络（Hybrid Deep Belief Network,HDBN）模型。文本分类和文本检索的实验结果表明,基于词向量嵌入的深度学习模型在性能上优于传统方法。此外,通过二维空间可视化实验,由HDBN模型提取的高层文本表示具有高内聚低耦合的特点。

壮族民间师公为了实现其为民禳灾祈福的职能，其“沟通”鬼神的手段集中体现在歌舞与法术两个主要方面，前是师公必备的“软工夫”，表现为搬演歌舞谄媚鬼神以与鬼神“和解”；后是师公要掌握的“硬功夫”，表现为施行法术驱鬼消灾以与鬼神“较量”。     

Assessing pupils’ attitudes towards religious and worldview diversity – development and validation of a nuanced measurement instrument

ABSTRACT

In this article, we outline the development and validation of an instrument for the assessment of attitudes towards religious diversity. The instrument uses four parallel scales, which evaluate attitudes towards Muslims, Christians, Jews and towards Non-religious people. Each scale is subdivided into eight parallel profile types and tests for the acceptance of six levels of social proximity. Drawing on a sample of 281 respondents (which include Muslims, Christians, Jews, Non-religious and Other) and employing the item response theory, we examine the reliability and validity of the instrument and present first results. We found that respondents discriminated greatly between the eight profile types and made clear distinctions with regard to the proximity of social relationships. Relative to these distinctions within each religion, differences between the four groups Muslims, Christians, Jews and Non-religious appeared minimal. These findings suggest that the results of previous research which indicate scepticism towards Islam despite general respect for religious diversity could be due to stereotyping.
