We May Be Teaching Information Literacy,but Are the Design First Year Students Actually Getting It?

The purpose of this study was to examine the outcomes of information literacy instruction for the Design first year students at the Temasek Polytechnic Library. Also of interest was whether or not the librarian was being seen as easily approachable, and if the students were deeming the lessons to be worthwhile. A participant action research approach was used, with the data being collected from multiple choice tests delivered via the institutional learning management system, group exercises, and a diagnostic assessment that was delivered before the workshops. It was found that the students did see the librarian as someone who was eminently approachable, and the majority of them found the lessons to be of value. It was concluded that the use of a diagnostic tool can be very useful in highlighting the gaps in students' knowledge, and that it would be beneficial to use it for all information literacy instruction at TP. Suggested future research could include a study of how much the students retain of IL skills into their third year of study.

以大数据、云计算、物联网等新一代信息技术引领的深度信息化阶段已经开启,这不仅让人工智能技术再次兴起,正在创造一个智慧时代,也正在深刻改变甚至颠覆人类的阅读行为,一个大阅读时代正在到来。在这样的大阅读时代,面临着创新转型发展的重大机遇与挑战,公共图书馆可以用设计思维进行建设,从硬件到软件都可以用以人为本的设计思维来建设;公共图书馆还可以用连接战略不断发展,把人与人、人与知识、人-空间-知识以及图书馆的实体空间与网络空间连接起来,公共图书馆可以实施阅读+和图书馆+战略的本质原因是阅读具有无所不在性。     

The Effect of Web Search Result Display on Users’ Perceptual Experience and Information Seeking Performance

ABSTRACT

Adding multiple sources of information in the display of Web search results may negatively affect users’ perceptual experience and information-seeking behavior. This claim was established by investigating the impact of different Web search compositions on users’ ability to extract specific information. In this article, we assumed that the quantity and order of different compositions (areas) in the Web search results page may contribute to individual’s ability to find information relevant to their search queries. An eye-tracking device was used to observe and compare the perceptual behavior of 14 users in an information-seeking task. The results showed that the use of different compositions in the display of Web results page significantly influenced users’ perceptual experience by reducing their attention to the organic results area. The quantity of these compositions was found to greatly increase the cognitive load of users when attempting to retrieve information from the organic area, which negatively affects their information-seeking performance. Our finding provides a rationale for further studies to consider the impact of quantity and order of Web page compositions on individuals’ perceptual attention and cognitive load in information-seeking task settings.     

Idea generation in biomedical engineering courses using Design Heuristics

ABSTRACT

With increasing demand for improved medical equipment and healthcare, next-generation biomedical engineers need strong design skills. Equipping biomedical engineering students with tools for idea generation and development can increase student design success. Design Heuristics are an ideation tool developed through empirical studies of product designs. While identified in the mechanical engineering space, Design Heuristics may be applicable in biomedical engineering design. In our study, we implemented a Design Heuristics session during upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate biomedical engineering design courses. We examined the applicability of Design Heuristics within individual and team concept generation contexts. The findings demonstrated that biomedical engineering students were able to use Design Heuristics to generate multiple concepts, and that initial concepts produced using Design Heuristics were carried over into final team design. The results support the applicability of Design Heuristics to student idea generation in biomedical engineering design.     

An intervention in the Halliwick Method procedures (swimming) for a group of individuals with Downs syndrome

The purpose of this study was to intervene in the process of the Halliwick Method (swimming), in order to improve the method, or some of its aspects, for a sample of 14 individuals with Downs syndrome (aged six to 21 years), using both an individualized educational setting approach and a differentiation of the elements of the Halliwick Method. The pre-intervention phase included medical examination, IQ, measurement of the behaviour according to the Rutter Scale and a Test of Physical Performance for each subject. Next, the subjects were assigned to seven pairs of case studies, where each individual following a Halliwick Methods swimming programme was paired with an individual following a modified swimming programme based on the same method, on physical health variables, IQ, behaviour and motor abilities. The duration of each swimming programme was 24 weeks for each individual, at a frequency of once per week, for 40 minutes. In the light of the findings of this study, further recommendations for the improvement of Halliwick Method procedures were made, common factors that affected the performance of each individual were identified and their relation with performance was explored.

高职教师绩效考核的核心是教师工作业绩细化指标的设计,它的设计与教学改革相关性最大,基于AHP和Delphi Method的综合运用,从一级指标的权重看,教师科研工作业绩明显大于教学工作业绩;从二级指标看,教学研究与改革的重要性正逐步被认识;教学工作虽是衡量工作业绩的第一要素,但其内容已经丰富化,不再局限于课堂教学;教学政策的评定也更加多样化。

利用降低光子晶体的对称性来提高绝对禁带宽度，在长方网格边上加正方介质柱而构成像素型长方晶格二维光子晶体，用快速平面波展开法计算其能带结构，通过参数优化，在低频区找到最大绝对禁带宽度△ωe=0．119ωe（ ωe=2πc／a，a为晶格常数，c为光速），绝对禁带中心频率ωmid=0．829ωe，△ω/ωmid=14，4％。
