Serial Argumentation Goals and Their Relationships to Perceived Resolvability and Choice of Conflict Tactics

The present study utilized a scale that measured Bevan, Hale, and Williams' (2004) serial argumentation goals and associated these goals with the perceived resolvability of the serial argument and serial argument conflict tactics. College students reporting on current and former dating partnerships completed a written survey containing close-ended items. Six of Bevan et al.'s (2004) ten original goals again emerged from data analyses, and the four remaining goals combined to form a single goal. These seven serial argument goals were related to perceived resolvability and conflict tactics in generally expected ways.     

The Monster Within: How Male Serial Killers Discursively Manage Their Stigmatized Identities

Investigations of identity management regarding serial killers are sparse and rarely account for the communal discourse surrounding serial homicide. Such studies are essential to understanding the intersections of stigma and identity, particularly for the exploration of reframing that is severely limited for deviant populations. This interpretive study examined 13 interviews with serial killers to explore stigmatized identity management. The analysis revealed that male serial killers rejected their stigmatized identity by indicating a lack of control over their non-normal behavior or by justifying their actions. They also indicated that societal influences, such as previous traumatic experiences and communal discourse surrounding serial killing, influenced their identity management.

中外主要港口城市可持续发展能力的比较研究

本文在阐述港口城市可持续发展能力内涵和外延的基础上,选取我国7个主要港口城市以及国际航运中心城市鹿特丹、新加坡和香港,构建评价指标体系,采用二级模糊综合评价法,评价并分析比较国内国际主要港口城市可持续发展的能力。研究结果表明,我国主要港口城市在港口生产能力上的评价值为0．055—0．645之间,上海等城市与国际大港差距较小;但在经济发展能力、资源环境支撑能力、智力支持能力和社会协调能力等方面,评价均值分别为0．278、0．529、0．255,仅相当于国际港口城市同类评价值的50．3％、79．1％和33％。因此,可持续发展整体能力评价值在0．239～0．465之间,只及国际城市的50％,国内港口城市与国际差距较大。从可持续发展能力的时间变化看,国内港口城市在经济支持和港口生产能力方面的提升速度相对略快,但智力支持、社会支持能力的增速变化远不及国际城市。为此,应通过发展智力支持系统、港口城市制度创新、港城和区域经济一体化、产业延伸和腹地建设与扩张等战略,提升国内港口城市的发展能力,带动中国在全球经济一体化进程中的可持续发展。

Revising the ISSN Standard: The Challenge of Change

ABSTRACT

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) has been the standard, eight-digit code used to identify newspapers, journals, magazines, and periodicals on all kinds of media—print and electronic—for the past 40 years. Periodically, the standard must be revised to allow it to accommodate new formats, changes in the publishing industry and information supply chain, and other developments in the information field. Regina Romano Reynolds, director of the U.S. ISSN Center at the Library of Congress, describes the issues that the ISSN International Centre perceives as necessitating a revision of the standard and the likely next steps in the International Organization for Standardization standards revision process.

Giving voice to the accused: Serial and the critical potential of true crime

The first season of Serial, to date the most popular podcast in the medium’s decade-long history, told the story of the conviction of 18-year-old Adnan Syed in 2000 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. At the center of Serial, producer Sarah Koenig presented Syed’s voice, his take on the prosecution’s evidence, and his own contemporaneous experience. This essay examines the way Serial used Syed’s voice to challenge institutional truth claims from within the textual space of crime journalism. “Criminal biography,” as a genre affordance of true crime, offers a textual means to interrogate modes of truth production and representation.
