Prospects for electronic publication in communication: A survey of potential users

This paper discusses the arguments for and against electronic publication and explores the potential acceptance for an electronic journal in the communication discipline. Using electronic mail, 85 users of a computer communication system were surveyed to determine the factors that would influence their decision to submit research reports to an electronic journal. The survey indicates that a majority of respondents would use an electronic journal to publish research reports and that most viewed publishing as a way to communicate about their work rather than a means for advancing in the field. The survey provides evidence that willingness to electronically publish decreased with higher occupational positions (from Masters student to Associate Professor) with this trend reversing itself at the level of Full Professor.     

高职学生性别角色调查及分析——以湖北职业技术学院为例

文章通过对湖北职业技术学院325名学生进行性别角色调查,发现女生在未分化、男性化、女性化、双性化四个维度上的分布差异显著,并发现护理专业男生与女生在性别角色量表各维度上的得分没有显著差异,而其他专业的男生与女生在女性负性量表上得分差异显著。     

女性生存困境探视——重读王安忆的“三恋”

王安忆的小说创作与卫慧、棉棉以及当下一些美女作家对眼下商业化大潮中的各种欲望化的生存景观的津津乐道不同,她的作品呈现的却是一幕幕带有终极意味的女性悲剧性生存景象的关怀.她的"三恋"系列,通过对"性"与"母性"的书写,实际是在发现、质询、反省和探究女性主体意识的迷失,进而思索女性的性别境遇及其生命体验,并为女性的性别本体复归而呐喊。     

Neoliberal narratives and the logic of abstinence only education: why are we still having this conversation?

Given the lack of citizen or medical support for abstinence-only education, we ask how abstinence-education maintains such a stronghold in America and other Western democracies’ public policy and consciousness. Our response has three parts. In the first, we outline the disproportionately negative health outcomes of sex education experienced by female, impoverished, ethnic and racial minorities, and LGBT youth. Next we address prominent narratives in sex education. We use the work of Pierre Bourdieu as a frame to understand neoliberal narratives and the accrual of cultural capital. Next we address two specific narratives in sex education, both of which align with broad tenets of neoliberal thought: the first of these is a focus on individual responsibility at the expense of understanding broader social structures. The second questions the role of education in a democratic nation that privileges the private over the overall health of the citizenry. In closing, we highlight comprehensive alternatives to sex education that can better prepare healthy individuals and democracy.

Sex differences in mental strategies for single-digit addition in the first years of school

Abstract

Strategy use in single-digit addition is an indicator of young children’s numeracy comprehension. We investigated Danish primary students’ use of strategies in single-digit addition with interview-based assessment of how they solved 36 specific single-digit addition problems, categorised as either ‘error’, ‘counting’, ‘direct retrieval’ or ‘derived facts’. The proportional use of each strategy was analysed as multi-level functions of school age and sex. In a first study (260 interviews, 147 students) we found decreasing use of counting and increasing use of direct retrieval and derived facts through years 1–4, girls using counting substantially more and the other two strategies substantially less than boys, equal to more than 2 years’ development. Similar results appeared in a subsequent study (155 interviews, 83 students), suggesting that the pattern is pervasive in Danish primary schools. Finally, we ask whether sex differences in strategy use is generally under-reported since many studies do not explicitly address them.     

A University-Based Literacy Service-Learning Program for Youthful Offenders on Probation: A Preliminary Study of the Program’s Development,Implementation and Feasibility

This article reports on the development, implementation and feasibility of a mid-Atlantic university-community service-learning literacy program for youth on probation. Undergraduate teacher candidates served as literacy instructors for the youth. We focus on benefits and administrative challenges of developing and implementing a preliminary service-learning program for probated youth living in the community. We analyzed focus group data collected from special education undergraduate instructors, interview data collected from probated youth and their case managers, pre-post literacy assessments administered to the youth, the youths’ court files and data maintained by the community-based agency. We conclude that our model of a university-community literacy partnership has the potential to raise reading performance of youth, motivation, and promote prosocial behaviors. Addressing the educational needs of youth on probation, however, is complex and multifaceted. We find that success requires consistent communication among all stakeholders, adequate funding for leadership, organization and curricula, and ongoing assessment and evaluation.     

新时期女性文学中的“姐妹之谊”

伴随着女性意识的觉醒,中国当代女性文学对于“姐妹之谊”主题的展示在新时期以后呈现出了三个方向:对于往昔的依恋,对于现实的抗争,以及对于未来的探问。它们共同构成了女性在现实中的方舟寻求。而这种寻求不可避免地要与现实发生碰撞,常常会被后者残酷地打断。于是该主题又在理想与现实两个层面上分别展开,这个过程深化了女性对于自身及世界的认识。     

价值中立:“没有女性的”女性心理学

女性心理学在批判心理学理论男性偏差的同时,站在女性的立场上提出了女性心理学应该由女性来研究的另一种不利于其发展的性别极端。这表明在研究中做到价值中立,促进“没有女性的”女性心理学的发展是很有必要的。     

EAG and behavioral responses of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Helicoverpa armigera</Emphasis> males to volatiles from poplar leaves and their combinations with sex pheromone

Electroantennogram (EAG) evaluation of selected compounds from wilted leaves of black poplar, Populus nigra, showed that phenyl acetaldehyde, methyl salicylate, (E)-2-hexenal elicited strong responses from male antennae of Helicoverpa armigera. When mixed with sex pheromone (Ph), some volatiles, e.g. phenyl acetaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, phenylethanol, methylsalicylate, linalool, benzaldehyde, (Z)-3-hexenol, (Z)-3-hexenylacetate, (Z)-6-nonenol, cineole, (E)-2-hexenal, and geraniol elicited stronger responses from male antennae than Ph alone. Wind tunnel bioassay demonstrated that various volatiles could either enhance or inhibit the effect of synthetic sex pheromone. (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol and linalool in combination with Ph could not induce any male to land on source at all, whereas phenyl acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, (Z)-6-nonenol and salicylaldehyde combined with Ph enhanced male response rates by 58.63%, 50.33%, 51.85% and 127.78%, respectively, compared to Ph alone. These results suggested that some volatiles should modify sex pheromone caused behavior and that some of them couldpossibly be used as a tool for disrupting mating or for enhancing the effect of synthetic sex pheromone in the field.
