语法翻译法过时了吗?

随着高校外语教学的发展，各种新的教学方法不断涌现，传统的语法翻译教学方法受到了不公正的待遇。作者认为，从中国学生学习英语的实际情况出发，该教学方法还有其存在的理由。外语教学工作者不应该冷淡这种教学方法，而应该在改革教学方法的过程中，综合运用语法翻译教学法和其他新的教学方法，因材施教，才能从真正意义上提高大学英语教学的质量。

Individual differences in mathematical ability: genetic, cognitive and behavioural factors

Identifying individuals with mathematical difficulties (MD) is becoming increasingly important in our education system. However, recognising MD is only the first stage in the provision of special educational needs (SEN). Although planning the effective remedial support is vital, there is little consensus on the interventions that are appropriate. There are two main reasons for this: first, MD has a variety of manifestations which appear to change with age; and second, there are many potential causes for the difficulties individuals experience. This paper addresses these issues by reviewing research evidence from three 'domains' of psychological research (genetic, cognitive, behavioural), all of which appear to offer insights into potential influences on mathematical ability.

For a learnable mathematics in the digital cultures

I begin with some general remarks concerning the co-evolution of representational forms and mathematical meanings. I then discuss the changed roles of mathematics and novel representations that emerge from the ubiquity of computational models, and briefly consider the implications for learning mathematics. I contend that a central component of knowledge required in modern societies involves the development of a meta-epistemological stance – i.e. developing a sense of mechanism for the models that underpin social and professional discourses. I illustrate this point in relation to recent research in which I am investigating the mathematical epistemology of engineering practice. Finally, I map out one implication for the design of future mathematical learning environments with reference to some data from the `Playground Project.
