Gender differences in academic achievement among Turkish prospective teachers of English as a foreign language

This study seeks to explain prevalent gender differences in academic achievement of 84 third‐year students enrolled in a pre‐service ELT (English Language Teaching) teacher training department. The study collected both qualitative and quantitative data through semi‐structured interviews from a sample of 38 students. A content analysis of the data indicated that male and female trainee teachers had differentiating perceptions of social roles and, as an artefact of these roles, they differed in the quality and quantity of time and effort allocated for their academic studies. Girls reported both longer periods of time and more efficient metacognitive disposition than their male peers. Another important factor for the observed differences appeared to be the perception of teaching as a profession. Female trainee teachers reported more intrinsic orientations towards the profession whereas male trainee teachers mentioned more extrinsic orientations, which seemed to directly influence the participants' engagement with their academic endeavour.     

The Role of Doctoral Advisors: A Look at Advising from the Advisor’s Perspective

The doctoral advisor is said to be one of the most important persons—if not the single most critical person—with whom doctoral students will develop a relationship during their doctoral degree programs (Baird 1995). However, we have limited knowledge regarding how doctoral advisors see their roles and responsibilities as advisors. Therefore, through in-depth interviews, we explored the perceptions of 25 exemplary doctoral advisors, who have graduated a large number of doctoral students, about their roles and responsibilities as advisors. We conclude this article with implications for doctoral education.

高强混凝土的研制及其抗压抗拉强度关系的建立

笔通过多次试探试验,配制出40组高强度等级混凝土立方体试块,并分别测定其抗压与抗拉强度数值,经回归分析得出高强混凝土立方休抗压强度fcu与抗拉强度ft．s的关系表达式：ft．s=0．1457 0．0678fcu。     

成人学校校长胜任力模型研究

近年来,胜任力的研究以及在教育、管理等领域的应用得到了越来越多的关注,但对于成人学校校长胜任力的研究却寥寥无几。本文在论述成人学校校长的角色基础上,通过比较分析中小学校长、大学校长以及企业管理者的胜任力,从理论上确定了成人学校校长胜任力的构成要素,提出成人学校校长胜任力包括教育引领力、领导与管理能力、服务导向、经营意识、道德影响力和人格魅力等六大要素构成。     

音乐教育专业实习生紧张心理的分析与对策

音乐教育专业的实习生由于理论素养浅薄、陌生环境与角色转换、自卑和胆怯心理,以及教案准备不充分等原因产生紧张心理。对此提出六点对策:1)强化师范意识,提高理论素养;2)强化教师角色,熟悉实习环境;3)树立决胜信心,克服自卑心理;4)吃透教学内容,做好充分准备;5)合理运用教学手段,提高教学能力;6)重视心理健康教育,提高心理素质。

Exploring employee engagement through communication

Employee engagement has been shown to be related to higher organizational productivity and profitability, among other favorable outcomes; however, there is disagreement in the literature regarding the definition of employee engagement and how employees enact their engagement. The current study explored how employees of a cooperative communicatively displayed their own engagement to others inside and outside of the organization. Fifteen semi-structured interviews with employees were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results showed that employees displayed their engagement to others through external displays, which contradicts past research done on employee engagement. The study also revealed that social exchanges occurred between the organization and the employees. The ways in which employees communicated their engagement was a direct response to the exchanges occurring between these multiple stakeholders.
