Comparing teacher roles in Denmark and England

This article reports the findings of a comparative study of teaching in Denmark and England. Its broader aim is to help develop an approach for comparing pedagogy. Lesson observations and interviews identified the range of goals towards which teachers in each country worked and the actions these prompted. These were clustered using the lens of Bernstein’s pedagogic discourse to construct teacher roles, which provided a view of pedagogy. Through this approach we have begun to identify variations in pedagogy across two countries. All teachers in this study adopted a variety of roles. Of significance was the ease with which competent English teachers moved between roles. The English teachers observed adopted roles consistent with a wider techno-rationalist discourse. There was a greater subject emphasis by Danish teachers, whose work was set predominantly within a democratic humanist discourse, whilst the English teachers placed a greater emphasis on applied skills.

In his masterpiece Women in Love,D.H.Lawrence devoted a large amount of space to the depiction of sex,sexuality and male-female relationship,which have always been the concerns of academic circle.Yet,in her study of this novel,the present author has noticed that the male-female relationships in the novel is largely subject to the institutions and seem doomed to failure.This essay will,with the help of theories of gender criticism,concentrate on the analysis of the institutionalized social and family roles undertaken by the main characters in the novel.

传统上认为,言语活动中的接受者,在交际中属于相对被动的角色。文章通过对动态话语活动中话语角色的考察,认为参与者的话语角色不是固定的,而是不断地发生着变化;而且,参与者还有可能同时身兼多种话语角色。各种话语角色之间相互影响,又决定于言语活动参与者的主观意图。分析表明,受话者在言语活动中不是被动的,而是主动的,和发话者一样,是言语活动创造者。     

Harmonising the Efforts of School Nurses and Teachers in Health Promotion in Schools

A vital facet that adds value to schools is the partnership between the departments of education and health at national level. At the heart of making this partnership effective in order to achieve its potential is the need for synchronisation of the roles of school nurses and teachers to mitigate sustainability risks. In order to investigate the harmonisation of these roles, an explorative qualitative study was conducted with school nurses and teachers in three district municipalities in two provinces of South Africa. The aim was to determine the perceptions of these two groups of their respective roles and the possibility of harmonising these roles. The administrative task, which included obtaining the consent of parents for their children's immunisation provided an opportunity for sharing responsibilities. However, the roles of school nurses - health screening and immunisation - and the roles of teachers - screening for barriers to learning - could not be harmonised due to a lack of understanding of health promotion and a tendency to work in silos because of a lack of trust and openness. This was compounded by the school managers’ inability to provide guidance and leadership.
