Foreign direct investment in industrial research and development: A study of German MNCs

This paper reports on the international research and development (R&D) investments of German multinational corporations (MNCs). Based on a detailed empirical survey of laboratory sites established by 49 German MNCs, we examine (i) the level and pace of R&D internationalization, (ii) the motivations and mandates of overseas R&D laboratories, as well as (iii) the strength of the laboratories’ internal and external ties. Participating firms account for about 46% of all German enterprises with international R&D activities and approximately 66% of the nation's privately funded R&D expenditures in 1999. The findings indicate that the timing and organization of German owned overseas R&D investments more closely resemble Japanese or French than US or Swedish firms. Furthermore, in line with prior studies, German MNCs increasingly invest in international R&D for resource as opposed to market-seeking motives. The paper also finds significant differences with regard to the laboratory's mission and its geographical location on one hand, and its internal and external embeddedness, on the other.

Long pentraxin 3 as a marker of COVID-19 severity: evidences and perspectives

IntroductionSeveral laboratory tests are characteristically altered in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), but are not totally accurate in predicting the disease outcome. The long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is quickly released directly at inflammation sites by many immune cell types. Previous studies have shown that PTX3 correlated with disease severity in various inflammatory conditions. Our study investigated the use of PTX3 as a potential marker of COVID-19 severity and compared its performance in detecting a more severe form of the disease with that of routine laboratory parameters.Materials and methodsStored serum samples of RT-PCR confirmed COVID-19 cases that had been obtained at hospital admission were retrospectively analysed. Intensive care unit (ICU) stay was considered a surrogate endpoint of severe COVID-19. Pentraxin 3 was measured by a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.ResultsA total of 96 patients were recruited from May 1st, 2020 to June 30th, 2020; 75/96 were transferred to ICU. Pentraxin 3 was higher in ICU vs non-ICU patients (35.86 vs 10.61 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models demonstrated that the only significant laboratory predictor of ICU stay was PTX3 (OR: 1.68 (1.19-2.29), P = 0.003), after controlling for comorbidities. The Receiver Operator Characteristic curve analysis showed that PTX3 had a higher accuracy compared to C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), ferritin in identifying ICU patients (AUC of PTX3 = 0.98; CRP = 0.66; LD = 0.70; ferritin = 0.67, P < 0.001). A cut-off of PTX3 > 18 ng/mL yielded a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 100% in identifying patients requiring ICU.ConclusionHigh values of PTX3 predict a more severe COVID-19.

信息聚合正成为信息组织与检索领域的研究热点。在对现有信息聚合相关概念进行阐释的基础上,本研究提出以情景、关系和对象作为信息聚合概念的主要构成,并依此对当前国内外信息聚合的典型应用和研究前沿进行梳理,依据聚合的情景、关系和信息粒度大小,将现有研究和实践中相关聚合模式归纳为情景聚合、语义聚合、引用聚合、社会网络聚合和粒度聚合五种主要模式和十二种表现形式;在此基础上提出多模式综合的深度聚合发展趋势:情景是决定关系和粒度等其他聚合要素的依据,情景的细化和深入研究势必带来多模式的综合应用,概念和实体、引用和社会网络等关系正被综合运用,而对不同粒度信息对象的聚合则是情景和关系聚合的落脚点。图1。参考文献96。     

职业核心能力的内涵分析及在高职教育中的培养

职业核心能力是除专业能力之外的基本能力,它没有职业性,是支持人们职业生涯发展,并伴随终身的个性心理品质。实质上,职业核心能力包括了方法能力和社会能力。当前,职业核心能力的培养存在内涵理解、课程观念、培养方式等偏差。职业核心能力的培养应构建一个整体化、系统化的课程体系,并最终落实在能力本位的课程设计和开发上。这种课程的设计和开发,应遵循设计导向的教育思想、能力本位的培养目标、实践过程的课程模式和行动导向的教学方法等。
