《中国大学十讲》是基于文化的视角研究我国近代高等教育的一本著作。近代高校的建立和发展是一部移植与传承不断磨合的过程,由此也形成了特殊的教育理念和大学精神。此书阐明了当代高校人文精神滑坡、教育理念模糊的原因所在。     

试论晚清民国时期侨商对腾冲现代化的影响

现代化的"内核"是指对现代化动力的认识、道路模式的选择,现代化的"基点"则是动态的过程,包括态度、信念、动力、变迁等方面,中国早期的现代化是在内外环境发生剧烈变动的背景下进行的,地处云南西部边陲的腾冲成为近代云南边疆地区现代化的缩影。亦侨亦商的腾冲侨商,通过争取民族独立、维护国家统一;倡导社会革命和社会改革,尝试工业化;培育人的现代化,为现代化创造内在动力,同时,保持与世界各国的交流与合作为现代化创造外在动力,为云南边疆地区的现代化作出了开启之功。     

Report on Travel to Athens,Greece September 9–21, 2006

The author reports on a visit to Athens, Greece, in September 2006 to visit book dealers, libraries, archives, and other institutions with which the Library of Congress has relations, for acquisitions and for collaborative projects in the areas of bibliographic control, microfilming, and digital projects.     

Sergius Yakobson in Europe and America

This article is devoted to the career of Sergius Yakobson, a librarian, historian, and educator. Its first part focuses on his role in the development of the Slavic collections of the Library of Congress in the 1940s to 1950s after his emigration to the United States. In the second part, the author compares ways in which Slavica, Rossica, and Sovetica developed in America and France during and after World War II, using materials from Yakobson's survey of Paris Slavic collections made in 1953. The final part briefly discusses his work as a Sovietologist.     

Trip Report: Moscow and Krasnoiarsk,Russia, October 1–12, 2010

In this article, the author describes his participation in a conference in Krasnoiarsk on Gennadii Vasil'evich Iudin; in a meeting in Moscow on the Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection of color photographs; and in a meeting on Russian émigré publications at the Russkoe zarubezh'e [Russian emigration] library in Moscow.     

Bibliographies of East European Newspapers at the Library of Congress

This article traces the development of recent bibliographies of East European newspapers held by the Library of Congress. Since 2006 the European Division of the Library of Congress has placed ten newspaper bibliographies onto its website for the following countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Hungary 1956, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Russia, and Serbia, as well as a mixed newspaper/journal bibliography of the Soviet independent press, 1985–1992. The author covers topics such as the need for such bibliographies, their collection development benefits, the difficulty in maintaining their currency, and their popularity based on website statistics.     

Organizing Interpretive Text for a Digital Library: How User Testing Found the Lost Frontier

SUMMARY

This paper looks at exercises done with user focus groups and how they have influenced the reorganization of Meeting of Frontiers' interpretive text content. Meeting of Frontiers is an international collaborative digital library project at the Library of Congress. Testing consisted of a user survey and card sorting exercises in order to refine the site hierarchy and identify problems with design proposals.     

Historical Resources of the Orthodox Church in America

SUMMARY

Orthodox Christianity has been present in America since the eighteenth century. Starting in Alaska with Russian missionaries, it has now spread to all fifty states. The history of this expansion is reflected in the archival holdings of a number of institutions, the most central of these being the archives of the Orthodox Church in America.     

Government Information on the Web

Summary

Government information is abundant on the World Wide Web, but finding that information is often difficult. The usual routine of utilizing search engines or directories does not work well, unless an individual is interested in a specific government agency. Instead, the savvy librarian will be well advised to check the prominent journals and newspapers for announcements of new sites and utilize the homepage of the Library of Congress. With some education and experience, a user can quickly find information using the Library of Congress' homepage, the Librarian's Index to the Internet, and Beaucoup.
