Regenerating Stuart Hall

ABSTRACT

In this personal essay I remember Stuart Hall and evaluate his contribution to the foundation of Cultural Studies. Some of his best-known written work comes out of the teacher–student interaction in the working environment of the seminar and classroom. Hall was a great teacher who inspired his students. This, I suggest, is the basis of his renown as a seminal figure in the emergence of Cultural Studies as the global field of inquiry that it is today.

Wanted: A Revolution in Library Continuing Education

This article reviews the work of the Library Continuing Education Summit organized by the Tennessee State Library and Archives in 2008 and the subsequent actions to implement the recommendations of that Summit. The summit objectives were to identify library training needs and opportunities, including those that could be shared by multi‐type libraries; to avoid duplication and encourage collaboration; to do better marketing and to create a centralized continuing education calendar for all libraries in the state. The author reviews these objectives and notes substantial specific organizational follow up to implement the recommendations in order to improve library continuing education. In spite of a wavering economy, the Summit has brought major changes in the organization and delivery of CE within Tennessee, including new e‐learning options, attention to the quality of instruction and how to improve operations and service delivery.

“New Conformism Redux”

To assess future priorities for cultural studies, this essay returns to the later writings of Raymond Williams, in particular his concerns about “new conformism.” It is argued that today we face comparable analytical challenges in which the pressures of institutionalization, and a strain of ahistoricism, have produced a “weak materialism” in contemporary cultural critique. The essay recommends a flexible and context-driven navigation of the current dominant tendencies toward micro-recuperative and macro-epistemological analysis, and proposes that this flexibility is the preferred mode of assuring that the dynamism of culture is captured by our critical methods.

Making Sense of Close Reading

The term ‘close reading’ is problematic for English teachers, yet a heightened awareness of the role that language plays in mediating experience and social relationships is fundamental to an informed and critically engaged citizenry. This essay finds that a focus on abstracted ideological content of literary texts comes at the cost of material, aesthetic considerations of language or ‘literariness’: it is the baby that has been thrown out with the bathwater. The essay argues that a false dichotomy between a literary education as ‘cultural studies’ and the study of ‘Culture’ (with a capital C) has diverted attention from the relationship between words and meaning. It draws on the work of Raymond Williams in contending that a renewed concept of ‘close reading’ should be at the heart of English teachers’ professional practice.
