Contextual feature selection for text classification

We present a simple approach for the classification of “noisy” documents using bigrams and named entities. The approach combines conventional feature selection with a contextual approach to filter out passages around selected features. Originally designed for call for tender documents, the method can be useful for other web collections that also contain non-topical contents. Experiments are conducted on our in-house collection as well as on the 4-Universities data set, Reuters 21578 and 20 Newsgroups. We find a significant improvement on our collection and the 4-Universities data set (10.9% and 4.1%, respectively). Although the best results are obtained by combining bigrams and named entities, the impact of the latter is not found to be significant.     

To search or to browse: How users navigate a new interface for online library tutorials

As academic libraries create online learning objects, it is important to consider whether such resources actually reach and answer the questions of intended users. This study considers three points of inquiry for one academic library: How its users make their way to the library's tutorials; user preference for searching or browsing for resources, when given both modes of access; and the kinds of online learning objects or tutorials users are seeking. A close examination of Web analytics and users’ search terms within the tutorials interface helped to illustrate patterns of access and highlighted users’ needs for tutorials and online learning objects.

Supporting adaptive learning pathways through the use of learning analytics: developments,challenges and future opportunities

Learning Analytics (LA) and adaptive learning are inextricably linked since they both foster technology-supported learner-centred education. This study identifies developments focusing on their interplay and emphasises insufficiently investigated directions which display a higher innovation potential. Twenty-one peer-reviewed studies are identified via a systematic review and classified based on the dimensions of a proposed framework. The findings of the review suggest that interesting work has been carried out during the last years on the topic. We conclude with a need for more research on the topic in specific learning domains and settings. Recommendations include: a clear strategy for adaptation augmented by LA, the combination of on-task with pre-task measures, and the combination of system-controlled adaptation with user-controlled adaptation. Future trends include the emergence of constructivist-collaborative environments that provide insightful models of complex student behaviour.
