On the Symbols of The Mayor of Casterbridge

Thomas Hardy(1840-1928)is a famous British Novelists.His excellent works have a far-reaching significance to the later gen erations.Treating his The Mayor of Casterbridge as a text,this paper is aimed to detect Hardy’s implied meanings of the symbols in a through textual analysis.This thesis is divided into three parts.The first part is the the symbol of the bridges.The second part deals with the symbol of the mel ody.Part three explores other symbols in The Mayor of Casterbridge.The symbols are all deliberately chosen in this book by the author to transmit his tragic view.Through the symbols of the bridges,the melody,the church,the tractor,the railway…,the author’s tragic view is well presented.By the research of each of those three parts,the conclusion of Hardy’s functions of the symbols can be drawn.     

Transcribing and Digitizing Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Letters for a Historical Digital Repository

In fall 2011, the Scott Memorial Library purchased 53 letters belonging to an 1841 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, John Plimpton Green. The library staff transcribed and digitized the letters, creating an online collection in the university's institutional repository, Jefferson Digital Commons. This article will detail the process of transcribing and digitizing the collection along with sharing statistics and the benefits of this project to global researchers.     

Jefferson's First Declaration of Independence: A Summary View of the Rights of British America Revisited

This essay examines Jefferson's Summary View of the Rights of British America as evidence of his craft as a storyteller. Specifically, I argue that Jefferson deploys a series of narrative renderings, the rhetorical effect of which is to eliminate the possibility of any genuine reconciliation with the English government. On the basis of this interpretation I conclude that the Summary View represents Jefferson's first declaration of independence.

托马斯·哈代的小说主要描写威塞克斯宗法制农村的生活,反映资本主义侵入英国农村后社会各方面的变化,在主题思想上经历了从"牧歌"到"悲剧"的嬗变.这种主题思想的变化既是由于时代生活的影响,也是他哲学思想变化发展的结果.

接受美学的主要代表汉斯·罗伯特·姚斯认为文学作品的存在史不仅是作品与作品之间的相关性历史和作品存在与一般社会历史的相关史,也是作品与接受相互作用的历史.哈代及其作品在中国的译介与研究受到了中国不同历史时期文化语境、文学思潮和阐述群体视野的流变话语的影响.在中外文学走向对话走向交流的20世纪,哈代及其作品在我们这个遥远的文明古国产生了深深的共鸣.这里以接受美学为契人点,探讨哈代及其作品由于不同的文化语境的影响在中国的译介及其研究的嬗变.     

范式的基质及其对教育科学研究的文化价值

范式产生于自然科学范畴。这一术语十分重要,内涵十分丰富,却很难定义。尽管有很多种不同的理解和用法,其实还是有其明确的基本思想和基本规定性,那就是学科基质。虽然在社会科学研究中使用范式概念至今还是一个亟待研究的问题,但是范式对于教育科学研究的文化价值意蕴却是鲜明的:通过对范式的研究,推动教育科学的改革,以人的主体性构建研究共同体,增强研究的规范性和示范性。
