英国小说家哈代的代表作《还乡》集中反映了他的生态思想。对埃格敦荒原的描述体现了哈代的生态整体观:自然环境不再纯粹是人物活动的背景,而具有积极的生命形态和独立的生存意蕴,人物不再是世界的中心,只是生态体系的一个组成要素,与自然环境保持着相互依存的关系;对荒原动植物意象的刻画,表达了哈代对人与自然应该和谐共处的生态渴求及对非人类生物形式的同情与关怀。而哈代对主要人物与自然的三种不同关系(亲近自然,远离自然,回归自然)的对比述写则进一步加深了小说的生态主题:人类只有和大自然保持亲密和谐的关系,才能获得幸福生活。     

Thomas Mann's Contributions to Current Library Debates on Cataloging and Bibliographic Control

This article examines the writing of Thomas Mann, Reference Librarian at the Library of Congress, regarding the enduring value of traditional methods and tools of research libraries, particularly online public catalogs, professional cataloging, and Library of Congress Subject Headings and pre-coordinated subject strings. One major contention asserted by Mann is that keyword searching on the Internet, while very valuable when used judiciously, should not be used as a substitute for traditional catalogs and cataloging. Also examined are the deprofessionalization of cataloging, inadequate ideas about library users, dangers to serious research, digitization, and the enduring value of books.

Aquinas’ Theory of Happiness and its Greek,Byzantine, Latin and Arabic Sources

Scholars have traditionally considered Aquinas’ theory of happiness as fundamentally Aristotelian. However, this interpretation does not seem an adequate characterization of Aquinas’ doctrine that appears as the result of the influence of several traditions. In interpreting Aristotle, Aquinas is influenced by two Byzantine Neoplatonic commentators of Aristotle – namely, Eustratius and Michael of Ephesus. In developing his theory, Aquinas tries to harmonize the Aristotelian perspective with Latin Neoplatonic notion of perfect happiness, put forward by Augustine, and both the Greek theory of the human intellect proposed by Pseudo-Dionysius and the Arabic doctrine of the human soul, expressed by the Liber De Causis. The Sententia libri Ethicorum provides the best opportunity to trace how Aquinas’ doctrine arises out of a dialogue between these different traditions.     

Sue Bridehead:The Girl of the Period in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure

Jude the Obscure was Thomas Hardy’s last novel creation,and he spent eight year from preparation to publication.Although this novel received a lot of criticisms instead of praises when it came out,it also can be considered as Thomas Hardy’s classical works.The theme of this novel is so brave to explore the existing women’s living circumstances in that time.With the industrial revolution in England,new thoughts and ideas sprang out.Women were no longer belonging to husband and family,and they began to be aware of their social roles and reconsider their identity in society and marriage.The aim of the paper is to analyze this novel from the feministic perspective and re-read the character of Sue Bridehead in the light of the theory"the girl of the period".
