‘The fun we had and the way we went about it’: Is now the time to learn lessons from L.A.T.E.’s past?

In the United Kingdom there appears to be a move to reduce the influence of ‘top down’ or centrally driven teaching and learning reforms in favour of returning control to schools and teachers to make necessary improvements at a local level. In this context, ideas about ‘professional learning communities’ or ‘communities of practice’ are potentially fruitful. This article, drawing on the author’s own research, suggests that if we are to take subject English into a life beyond the National Strategies, it would be worth our remembering how one English ‘community of practice’– the London Association for the Teaching of English – helped to shape one model of the discipline.     

Impact of Rohingya influx on host community’s relations to places in Bangladesh

This article assesses the ‘relations to place’ of the communities neighboring the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh. In doing so, two qualitative data collection methods (FGD and in-depth interview) were applied in the neighboring communities that focused on their place relations (i.e., sense of place, place utility, place attachment, place dependence, place identity, and place obduracy). The results show how the unprecedented influx of Rohingyas negatively influences their relations with the places. Therefore, this paper proposes further studying the complexity of place relations in the host communities, which may contribute to future policy planning concerning Rohingyas in Bangladesh.     

The body and communities in cyberspace: A Mmarcellian analysis

Many who speak glowingly about the possibilities for human relations in cyberspace, or virtual communities, laud them precisely because such communities are to a great extent free of the real spatial-temporal restrictions rooted in the limitations of our bodies. In this paper I investigate the importance of the body in establishing and maintaining human relations by considering the thought of the twentieth century French philosopher Gabriel Marcel. Because Marcel emphasized the central importance of the body in one's personal self-identity as well as in initiating and maintaining intersubjective bonds in human communities, he is able to offer some interesting reflections on the character of virtual communities. I suggest that a number of the features of cyberspace and its communities that make it attractive to many are precisely the characteristics that Marcel would consider detrimental to establishing intimate lasting human communities. I conclude by indicating why I think that Marcel would be concerned that certain trends in our high tech culture may well lead many to prefer ``living' in virtual, rather than real communities.

The Role of Heads of Department in the Professional Development of Educators: A Distributed Leadership Perspective

The qualitative study reported on was, undertaken from a distributed leadership perspective, and was an attempt to provide understanding of how heads of department (HoDs) develop educators within the organisational context of different schools and subject departments. The findings are related to the current policy framework for professional development in South African schools. Two fee-paying and two non-fee-paying schools were selected and interviews were conducted with HoDs from single subject (unitary) and multi-subject (federal or confederate) departments in each school. The data was transcribed, coded, analysed and related to the research question. The findings confirmed that HoDs are a key link between principals and the educators in their classrooms. This supports the view that HoDs have formal responsibilities and accountabilities and they wield a horizontal and a vertical influence. Recommendations are made to improve professional development practice by HoDs in particular and in the education system in general.

我国情报学历史源流主要有图书馆领域、技术领域、决策咨询领域和管理领域。每个领域都把自身的独特理论与理念融入到情报学理论构建中,形成各具特色的情报学共同体。这些共同体都是对信息对象与信息过程的不同视角解析,根植于不同的领域环境与目标。基于共同信息对象与信息过程的基础,应把它们在一定视域下集成融合起来,以整合的情报学共同体形式实现情报学发展的历史跨越。     

蛇足再强也无益——派系度，外接企业与团体创新绩效

网络内的派系团体比普通的联盟具有更高的联系紧密度,有助于进一步共享知识和合作研发。目前的研究较少关注派系团体与对团体创新能力的影响。本文基于中国9个高科技行业的联盟数据,并计算派系团体的派系度。派系团体内的构成越复杂,派系度越大。我们使用派系过滤算法和负二项回归模型,研究了最基本的3-派系-团体对于派系团体的创新能力的影响。研究结果表明,派系度与派系团体的创新能力之间呈倒U型关系,而派系团体外的企业数量会对这影响过程产生抑制作用。本研究对于企业联盟结派时选择派系团体梯队时,有一定的借鉴作用。

Universal museums, museum objects and repatriation: The tangled stories of things

This paper discusses the contribution of the 2003 ‘Declaration on the Importance and Value of Universal Museums’ to the debate on repatriation. The ‘Universalist’ approach taken by the Declaration is first considered, noting the implications of its emphasis on art, the heritage of museums and objects, along with its focus on the sculpture of ancient Greece and the enlightenment origin of museums such as the British Museum. It is argued that it reveals an essentialist approach that derives from a particular Western perspective, rather than being truly ‘universal’, and then considers whether a similar problem underlies many of the arguments advocating repatriation. The second part of the paper explores the opportunities offered by an approach which emphasises the ‘biography of objects’. This demonstrates how the tangled histories of objects and their many meanings can be considered. Repatriation is shown to be able to result in an increase in knowledge and understanding, rather than its destruction, and so meets the declared aim of the Declaration to ‘foster knowledge by a continuous process of reinterpretation’.
