A Quantitative Analysis of Research Output of Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi,India

This study provides an overview of the research output of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, in terms of number of publications contributed by faculty members and researchers. The study analyzes bibliometric indicators of published research of Jawaharlal Nehru University as indexed in the Web of Science. There were 5,007 research publications from Jawaharlal Nehru University in the four decades from 1971–2010 (70s; 80s; 90s; and 2000s). The study noted encouraging trends in collaborative research work with multiple-authored research papers. International collaboration in research was also observed among the faculty members and researchers. English was the predominant language of communication. The social scientists and humanists of Jawaharlal Nehru University publish books which are not indexed in the Web of Science. Similarly, research work published in regional languages or published in national level journals are seldom included in the Web of Science. It suggests that research needs to be done by collecting data from the Indian Citation Index and books published by the researchers in order to get an accurate and consolidated picture of the research output of the university.

基础科学研究的发展实力和研究水平是衡量地域和高校科技创新能力的重要指标。文章利用Web of Knowledge检索平台对2001-2010年河南大学发表的SCI、SSCI、A＆HCI论文进行调查,从论文的数量与类型、来源出版物、学科、合作机构和国家、论文作者、被引频次等角度进行全方位统计分析,揭示河南大学学科研究发展的现状,为河南大学的教学研究工作和自然科学、人文社会科学的国际化发展提供参考和建议。     

论高校图书馆文献采选绩效评估体系构建

文献采选工作是图书馆馆藏建设的基础,也是评价图书馆服务工作优劣的指标之一。文章以某高校图书馆为例,以探讨和交流为目的,从文献采选的角度入手,围绕文献采访、加工、经费控制以及入藏管理等工作,探究在高校图书馆如何设计文献采选指标,构建绩效评估体系。     

基于Web2.0的高校图书馆虚拟学习社区构建探讨

虚拟学习社区是学习者网上学习的主要场所,基于Web2.0技术的虚拟学习社区可解决传统虚拟学习社区中寻找学习伙伴与归属感难、分享学习资源难等问题,设计了高校图书馆虚拟学习社区的五大功能模块,提出了高校图书馆虚拟学习社区的结构模型。     

Reaching Out to International Students: A Focus-Group Approach to Developing Web Resources and Services

Librarians at the State University of New York at Buffalo implemented the Resources for International Students Web guide to support library outreach to a multicultural and multilingual audience. A focus group helped librarians to understand the needs of new international students and tailor Web resources accordingly. In addition to creating awareness of international student cultural challenges, this article presents focus-group guidelines to assist in the planning process of library services and resources.     

The Feeling of ‘Silverland’

This is a discussion of the group of journalists working in and around Virginia City during the 1860s and 1870s, when the area became the world centre of the silver mining industry. The so-called Sagebrush writers reported on mining prospects for readerships locally and internationally, as well as writing anecdotes and stories about the life of the highly transient local communities generated by the search for silver. Theirs is writing characterised both by caution in responding to the mining industry and by an aggressive humour in depicting the local life of a cosmopolitan instant city. These newspaper writers have been considered in the local context of the Nevadan frontier. Here, I discuss their engagement with a complex and internationally networked industry, and also their address to the collectivities of the local population.     

Preserving Russia's Digital Cultural Heritage: Acquisition of Electronic Documents in Russian Libraries and Information Centers

This article discusses collection development strategies for electronic materials, particularly Web content, by Russian libraries and information centers. The author describes multiple methods, including Web harvesting, licensing, and legal deposit. Although there is a long tradition of legal deposit for printed material in Russia, legal deposit of electronic documents is more complex. Recently proposed amendments in the Duma may facilitate the legal deposit process for electronic materials. Electronic documents should be preserved and made accessible for the further development of science, culture, and education in Russia.     

Astana 2014 ASEEES-CESS Joint Regional Conference Report

The report summarizes the joint regional conference of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) and the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) in Astana, Kazakhstan in May 2014. This conference is the fourth biennial regional conference of CESS together with the first regional conference organized by ASEEES, and had more than 300 participants from many different countries of the world. Topics discussed included areas such anthropology, economics, education, history, international relations, library science, language and literature, political science, and sociology.

The article discusses online sources dealing with current Russian laws and regulations. Included are websites from branches of the federal government, commercial databases and commercial information systems.     

Web 2.0 Tools Ease Renovation Service Disruptions at The Ohio State University Libraries

ABSTARCT

The Thompson Library, the main library of The Ohio State University (OSU), began a major renovation in fall 2006 that required the library to close for three years. During this time, the bulk of the circulating collection and many of the personnel relocated to an interim facility. The distance imposed by the renovation created special challenges for service to patrons and communication among library faculty and staff. The OSU Libraries used blogs, podcasts, a wiki, instant messaging, and the campus course management system to reach as many of the constituents of the campus community as possible.
