This narrative analysis explores the juxtaposition of local crime news in Omaha, Nebraska with coverage of local troops embedded in Afghanistan in April 2011. It argues that narrative devices such as scene-setting, characterization, sourcing, and the use of dramatic elements constructed violence abroad as heroic and expected, but disruptive and dangerous at home; these contrasts worked to sustain a dominant ideology of institutional superiority.     

文明忧思:阿诺德J·汤因比的战争观探究

英国史学家汤因比不仅在历史领域有着卓越的研究,在国际政治方面也不乏独到之处。他的国际政治研究具有突出的历史比较视野和理想主义与现实主义两种哲学融合的特点。他通过对历史上众多文明兴衰的考察,把战争起源归结为两个层面,即国内层面的社会不公和国际层面的无政府状态。随着世界的整体发展和军事技术的革新,战争已成为人类文明不能承受之重,消灭战争已成为人类文明存续的唯一选择。在消灭战争的可选道路中,他认为应通过自愿合作的世界共同体方式来消除无政府状态,进而实现世界的持久和平。

自新中国成立到中日恢复邦交,两国虽然在政治上鲜有互动,但经济交流未像政治坚冰一般。多边关系的亲疏冷热会直接影响贸易进程的顺利与否,同时政经分离也是此时中日民间贸易的特殊现象。

《聊斋志异》记录的大量战争事件,集中发生于明末清初的北中国。为了忠实表现乱世中黎元之悲,也为了谴责肆意的屠戮行为,作者选择了委婉曲折的笔法。如此一来,作者在为创作争得了合法空间的同时,也因语意指向上的模糊而引起后世研究者的争论。究其原因,源自于清初汉族士人普遍的内在生存困境———微妙的民族情感和欲言不能的内心压抑。     

近十年吐蕃军事研究综述

松赞干布于公元633年统一青藏高原后便开始了其四方征伐的历史,从公元7世纪中叶到9世纪末,吐蕃的铁蹄曾震撼了中亚、西亚、南亚和大唐的西部领土,征服领土超过了本土面积,这其中强大的军事实力起到了决定性作用。本文就近十年来有关吐蕃军事的研究成果进行梳理,在对整体状况研究的基础上探讨其研究的特点。     

论民国时期的旧书交易

目前学界缺乏针对民国时期旧书交易的专题研究。民国时期的旧书交易市场非常繁盛,其旧书的来源也非常广泛,如来源于私人藏书、学生、破落大家或＂搜旧人＂等等。但是民国时期的旧书交易受到日本人、政府、战争等多方面的影响,使旧书市场经营跌宕起伏。日本人对旧书的搜罗和洋纸的倾销使旧书市场一度活跃,政府的干预规范了旧书买卖的秩序和保护了文化,而战争使旧书市场极度萧条,对旧书及其文化也是极大的摧残。

A Failed Project in Turkey's Sports History: The Law on Physical Education of 1938

The aim of this article is to analyse the Law on Physical Education of 1938 to demonstrate the state interventions in Turkey's sport history. The Law was claimed to be the first one in the world which made physical education (PE) and sports obligatory to its citizens and was created on the verge of the Second World War. It was prepared by Carl Diem under the direction of Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. According to the Law, male citizens aged between 12 and 45 years, and female citizens between 12 and 30 years would be required to perform PE and sports regularly. For the execution of the Law, a General Directorate of Physical Education was founded. Many grand plans such as creating sports complexes, and training teachers and staff were made without taking the socio-economic conditions of the country into consideration. Ultimately, due to the effects of the economic and political conditions of the nation and the wider world, the Law failed to fulfil the expectations of its creators. Two government-supported journals named Beden Terbiyesi ve Spor and Ülkü are examined here as primary sources to see how the Law was enforced and how they reflected the Law and the period.     

Exploding the Myths of Sport and the Great War: A First Salvo

This article examines the connection between sport and the First World War. It challenges the conventional wisdom that the athleticism associated with a public school education made a significant contribution to the British war effort. Additionally it argues that athleticism had a negligible influence on elementary school pupils who comprised the bulk of the military forces. It also suggests that while army authorities eventually accepted that sport had a positive role to play and made it a compulsory element of military training, it also existed as an escape from hostilities rather than just preparation for them.
