Health information practice: integrating,inspiring and innovating

The 2017 virtual issue of the Health Information and Libraries Journal (HILJ) is published to link to the 12th International Congress on Medical Librarianship and the 2017 EAHIL Workshop taking place in Dublin, Ireland on 12–16 June 2017. The conference title is Diversity in Practice: integrating, inspiring and innovative and it is exploring how health science librarianship, in all its diversity, is integrating, inspiring and innovating practice. These themes have been used to compile this virtual issue, which contains published articles selected from HILJ from the June 2014 issue through to September 2016. The virtual issue mirrors the format of a regular issue of HILJ, namely a review article, six original articles and our three regular features: ‘Dissertations into Practice’, ‘International Perspectives and Initiatives’ and ‘Teaching and Learning in Action’. All articles included in this virtual issue are available free online.     

The Evolution of GIS Services within North American Academic Libraries: Documenting Change through the Decades (1995–2016)

This review was conducted to identify articles written about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services offered in the United States (US) and Canadian university and college libraries. In the early 1990's, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) GIS Literacy Project, in partnership with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), helped enable ARL member libraries to create GIS services within their libraries. By the mid to late 1990's, librarians from academic institutions began to write articles that discussed how their library developed GIS services and the components involved with operating a GIS service. Writing about GIS services in academic libraries continued on into the 2000's and 2010's. This review of the literature will document the areas of staffing, service, technology, and data provision for GIS service units from three decades (1990's, 2000's, and 2010's).     

Library Space Redesign and Student Computing

Academic libraries are spending considerable time and study on redesigning spaces. The use of technology is often an important part of these redesigned spaces. The space redesign goals at F.D. Bluford Library focus on creating open, activity-promoting, colorful spaces that are designed to be attractive to students. The goals also focus on implementing hybrid spaces that allow students to work alone or in groups, with support for mobile technologies like laptops or tablets. The space redesign goals focus on upgrading the quality of desktops available but reducing the number of desktops. This study examines the question “Does our library renovation significantly change computer use in the redesigned area?” Key findings include that, in defiance of expectations, there is no significant decrease in desktop usage despite the decreased number of computers. However, findings show there is a significant difference in tablet use, despite tablet-friendly spaces and charging options. Surprisingly, our students use fewer tablets. Laptop usage shows no significant difference. In summary, our research shows desktop computing—especially high-quality desktop computing—appears to still have a role in academic libraries even in the mobile technology age.     

论回复时限存在的不足及应对措施--关于维护学术期刊作者权利的思考

稿约规则中关于回复时限的条款在某些方面存在着不足，在实际操作中易造成作者合法权利的损害。因此，修改回复时限、理顺出版者与作者间的权利和义务关系十分必要。解决这个问题，可从导致审稿时间过长的“瓶颈”——审稿过程入手，做到工作规范，审稿高效，退稿及时。     

营造成人高校的文化氛围

成人高校的学员具有思想上的独立性、性格上的定型性、学习态度上的功利性和学习形式上的松散性,对他们要以文化氛围来进行潜移默化的教育。师资、学员和校园构成学校文化氛围的三大部分,而领导的重视、资金的投入和环境的烘托又是营造文化氛围的三个重要方面。     

21世纪编辑责任撷谈

作为一名编辑,表面看来只是决定一篇文稿能否发表或一本书能否出版。其实,取舍之间却关系到我国科技文化事业的发展走向,关系到“科学发展观”能否真正贯彻、落实。因此,在21世纪里编辑们肩负着重大的政治责任、高尚的道德责任、神圣的学术责任、勇敢的创新责任和无私的提挈责任,等等。为中华民族的伟大复兴,理应承担起历史所赋予的新的使命。     

关于在高职院校实行学分制改革的思考

我国高校正在试行学分制管理，同时也在进行学分制管理模式的改革和探索。高职院校在试行学分制的过程中，应根据自身特点，以保证教学质量为前提，采取多种应对措施，循序渐进。逐步实施。     

学术领域的合法统治

在中国，研究学术系统权力类型的学者，通常将学术领域的权力分为行政权力和学术权力。这样的划分方式反映的是学术领域权力类型的简单表象，并不能说明性地描述学术领域的诸多事实。笔者认为，使用韦伯的社会学基本概念框架来划分学术领域的权力类型，将分析引向学术领域的行政体系，会更准确和深刻地反映当代中国学术领域的合法统治及其根源。

高校图书馆读者流失问题分析

随着网络的发展,越来越多的读者使用网络搜索引擎作为获取信息服务的入口,许多高校图书馆都面临不同程度的到馆读者减少的问题。通过对高校读者使用信息资源情况的分析,笔者认为目前使用高校图书馆的读者人数并没有明显的减少,图书馆应该更多关注改进信息服务的方式,以适应新环境下读者对信息服务方式的要求。
