Simplicity and complexity in child language and its explanation

Abstract

Theories of early language development differ in the degree of abstraction granted to the early stages, and in the perspectives these adopt with regards to the interaction between lexicon and syntax. The paradigm associated with generative approaches and the continuity hypothesis attributes early complexity and abstraction to access to innate knowledge of structure. The paradigm generally identified with emergentist/general learning approaches assumes complexity is an emergent property that arises from experience. Comparing paradigms is difficult because they pursue different goals: one focuses on developmental stages and the other on the nature of representation at each stage. The core claim of generative approaches is that the product of lexical learning must interface explicitly with a system capable of formal productivity and of supporting compositionality. The present article reviews evidence for productivity in early negation, on the growth of syntactic recursion, and on ellipsis construction, and examines the notion of merge and compositionality and their explanatory role in language and language development.     

Supporting Maternal Transition: Continuity,Coaching, and Control

The transition from maternity services to community child health services on discharge from hospital occurs at a potentially vulnerable time for women in their transition through the childbearing/early parenting continuum. Their experiences contribute to their developing maternal efficacy and parenting skill. The ideal attributes of services that aim to support women and their families during this time include continuity of care, service integration, and birth in accessible, community-based contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate aspects of maternal experience of mothers attending with their infants a publicly funded drop-in postnatal health-care service, as well as their reasons for attending and their perceptions of its usefulness to them as a mechanism of continuity and a source of support.

Dreams and realities: The international dimension of the 1991 white house conference on library and information services

Using longitudinal time-series data, this article analyzes the causes of the recent sharp increase in household expenditure on telecommunications in South Korea with an almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model. The analysis shows that the Korean household demand for telecommunications has become highly price elastic following structural changes associated with the rapid diffusion of mobile phones and the Internet during 1998–2008. Following these structural changes, telecommunications services have become complements for transportation, books and printed matter, and culture and recreation services, but substitutes for culture and recreation durable goods. Consequently, one important reason for the increase in the expenditure on telecommunications in Korea is the migration of many services from offline to online by means of telecommunications.
