Simplicity and complexity in child language and its explanation

Abstract

Theories of early language development differ in the degree of abstraction granted to the early stages, and in the perspectives these adopt with regards to the interaction between lexicon and syntax. The paradigm associated with generative approaches and the continuity hypothesis attributes early complexity and abstraction to access to innate knowledge of structure. The paradigm generally identified with emergentist/general learning approaches assumes complexity is an emergent property that arises from experience. Comparing paradigms is difficult because they pursue different goals: one focuses on developmental stages and the other on the nature of representation at each stage. The core claim of generative approaches is that the product of lexical learning must interface explicitly with a system capable of formal productivity and of supporting compositionality. The present article reviews evidence for productivity in early negation, on the growth of syntactic recursion, and on ellipsis construction, and examines the notion of merge and compositionality and their explanatory role in language and language development.     

The Origins of Football Debate: The Continuing Demise of the Dominant Paradigm, 1852–1856

This article presents original and compelling new material in ‘the origins of football debate’, this time from the period 1852–1856, using the British Library's digitisation project of nineteenth-century newspapers. In so doing, it addresses the alleged disappearance of football in the wider community in mid-century, a problem that has troubled a number of scholars, not least because of the rapid expansion in the game amongst the working and lower middle classes from the 1870s onwards. In addressing this allegation it outlines a much broader and more stable footballing culture across the country than hitherto thought, based on games played at church, work and school outings, rural fetes and galas, alongside those played at celebrations and as street football or casual games in meadows, fields or greens, arguing that those historians who have simply looked for formal games were looking for the wrong forms of football in the wrong places, based on twentieth-century notions of what constitutes a ‘game’ of football. Overall, the article has added yet more evidence of the cultural continuity of football across the mid-century and contributed to the continuing demise of the so-called ‘dominant paradigm’ in the ‘origins of football’ debate.

基于健康心理学研究领域内的"健康行为过程理论"(Health Action Process Approach;HAPA),采用纵向研究设计,历时4个月对331名高校教职员工的体育锻炼行为及其相关社会认知变量进行3次调查。研究结果表明,积极结果期待和行动自我效能对锻炼意向的预测作用显著,锻炼意向能够很好地预测锻炼计划;恢复自我效能、锻炼意向和锻炼计划是体育锻炼行为的近轴预测因子;行动自我效能通过维持自我效能预测恢复自我效能。该研究验证了HAPA模型的连续性特征,为今后制定有效的体育锻炼干预措施,促进高校教职员工参与和坚持体育锻炼,提升健康水平提供了理论依据。
