ABSTRACT

This article examines the literature on schooling for teenage mothers in order to expose the normalizing discourses that position young mothers as at risk for failure. Through an exploration of the historical and socio-cultural positioning of teenage mothers over the past few decades, the author illustrates the schooled responses to adolescent mothers and the responses of adolescent mothers to school structures and marginalizations. The article concludes with suggestions for further research that would address the achievements and the strengths of young mothers and may provide space for thinking about other groups of students who have traditionally been labeled at risk.  相似文献

Abstract. This article describes a program of demanding courses offered in an academic community to nontraditional and at-risk, first- and second-year students at a research university. The delivery of instruction uses multiple pedagogies, including collaborative learning and labs where students work together under the guidance of undergraduate assistants. A research study showed that students in the program perform better than traditional students in equivalent courses. In addition, this study provides strong evidence that when students of the program take the same subsequent classes offered to the general university population, their success rates match or exceed those of their traditional classmates.  相似文献

Suicidal behavior is a significant concern among graduate students. Because many suicidal graduate students do not access mental health services, programs to connect them to resources are essential. This article describes the Interactive Screening Program (ISP), an anonymous, Web-based tool for screening and engaging at-risk graduate school students. We include qualitative responses from participating graduate students providing information on their symptoms or circumstances, desire for treatment, and gratitude for services. Concluding remarks highlight ISP's benefits for graduate students and ways to implement this protocol for other graduate student populations.  相似文献

人口老龄化是全球性的人口发展特征和趋势,中国政府和社会各界正在积极应对它。当前,中国人究竞该怎样认识和应对人口老龄化现象,仍是一个值得人们去思考、探索和实践的真问题。笔者认为,除了从法律法规和公共政策等正式制度的视角去认识和应对人口老龄化现象。还应该特别重视从非正式制度的视角去认识和应对它。本文拟通过裕固族敬老习俗的社会人类学描述与阐释,说明在实现社会控制的全部制度中,法律法规固然是其重要组成部分,但却不是它的全部,习俗作为非正式制度也具有相当的社会控制功能。在新的历史条件下和和谐社会建构过程中,为了迎接老龄化社会的挑战和繁荣社会主义新文化,应该充分重视和发挥敬老习俗等非正式制度的价值和作用。  相似文献

Abstract

While the public library exists to serve a diverse clientele, one group often ignored consists of those with invisible challenges, such as attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), in children and adults. This article covers background information on ADD/ADHD, diagnostic criteria, and common characteristics of the disorder. The role of the public library in serving the ADD user is examined through needs assessment, training, programming, collection development, and continuing education for librarians. The public library can and should ensure that those who suffer from disordered attention skills benefit from the ordered knowledge at their local library.  相似文献

A major obstacle to attracting students from cultural/ ethnic/linguistic minorities is the professional stereotype. Removing this is a first step in increasing minority representation in the profession. A second step would require that schools of library/information science identify people-oriented individuals and actively recruit them. With these preliminary steps and minor adjustments to the current curriculum, library/information science education can make strides in diversity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article contends that it is essential for academic librarians to identify and remain mindful of the unique needs of an increasingly diverse student demographic to ensure that academic libraries are a welcoming place for all students. It is through diversity initiatives that we can expect to improve the educational outcome for students by presenting the library as a vital part of their college experience. The article defines diversity in the most “elastic” sense of the word—including minority racial groups, but expanding the term to include international students, graduate students, returning students, distance learners, transfer students, “at-risk” students, and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender students.  相似文献

Abstract

The climate of change in music reference represents a challenge to librarians. The three issues in the library literature that probably have the greatest impact on music reference service and are the subject of this paper are changes in users, sources, and modes of access to sources. These three issues are certainly related, as users need to use sources, and they need to know how to access them in order to use them. Reference librarians are called upon to mediate this process. Music library collections have their own peculiarities, however. Because they contain a wider variety of materials than many other kinds of library collections, reference librarians for music collections must be aware of the format, content, and intended uses of these materials, as well as the research patterns of their patrons. In the recent past, as cultural norms have changed with the paradigm of Western culture, users have wanted to use music libraries in new ways, and librarians are challenged to accommodate them. The musical genres used and requested by today's library patrons are different than they once were, both for listening and for academic study. Musical reference sources are being issued in electronic formats, and this represents a challenge for some users. The expanded use of interlibrary loan and electronic access to materials represents new opportunities and challenges. Music librarians are being called upon to provide services to patrons they may never see.  相似文献

Many studies have examined the relationship between social network sites (SNSs) and the development of social capital. However, most studies to date have only considered college and adult populations. This study examines the patterns of SNS use in an urban, teenage sample in the United States. It tests the hypothesis that use of SNSs is related to higher levels of social capital. The results show that youth who use Facebook and Myspace report higher social capital in both their school and online relationships. In addition, the analysis suggests that distinct modes of SNS experiences are differentially related to bridging and bonding social capital. Time spent in SNSs is related to bridging capital, while positive or negative experiences are related to bonding capital. The study offers new insights into how youth experience SNSs and the relationship of that experience with their connection to the world.  相似文献
