Bumble Boosters: Students Doing Real Science

Bumble Boosters was a lottery grant funded cooperative project between the University of Nebraska – Lincoln Department of Entomology, the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program, and the Lincoln Folsom Children's Zoo. The primary education goal of the project was to create a community of learners to conduct authentic research on bumble bees in Nebraska. Participants were actively engaged in collecting bumble bees and placing nesting domiciles. Internet technology was employed to facilitate networking between project participants. Systematic evaluation was conducted during and after the project.

Weighing up the Influence of Context on Judgements of Mathematical Literacy

Mathematical literacy, viewed as a set of ideas involving applications of mathematics to real-world contexts, has recently featured in curricular discussions about the aims for mathematics education. This article explores the effect that differences in the way that a mathematical task is contextualised can have on students’ mathematical arguments and, therefore, on their perceived levels of mathematical literacy. Seventy-two students’ responses to three similar measurement tasks are described according to Kaiser and Willander’s levels of mathematical literacy. The arguments used for assigning each level of mathematical literacy are then investigated for the presence of specific macro- and micro-linguistic features. The context of the task affects what students perceive to be most relevant approaches to use, which are reflected in the arguments they give; this, in turn, affects external judgements of their level of mathematical literacy.

对“选项式英语交际试题”交际性的质疑

外语测试理论的发展进入交际语用阶段。在此背景下,我国一些大规模考试中出现了“选项式交际试题”。本文对此类试题的交际性提出质疑,认为它只反映了情景真实性,却忽视了交际过程的真实性,测试过程仅停留在语用分析层面,无法测量受试者实际运用语言的能力。本文还指出此类试题与其初衷相悖的先天局限性。考查交际知识固然有意义, 但若将涉及交际知识的选项式客观试题等同于交际语言测试则反映出对交际测试理论的认识存有片面性。在外语作为交际工具而被广泛使用的今天,认清交际语言测试的本质及其意义尤为重要,有助于我们在外语测试实践中针对不同的情况采取合适的测试手段,使外语测试活动更加具备目的性和合理性。     

Effects of memory load on word recognition: Are there dual-routers in Norway?

The release-from-competition (RFC) effect, inwhich a difficult concurrent memory task speedspronunciation of low-frequency irregular wordsbut slows pronunciation of other word types,has been interpreted as strong support for thedual-route approach to word recognition. However, attempts to replicate this effect havenot produced consistent results. Besides,attempts at replication have mostly beenlimited to skilled readers of English. Thepresent research attempted to replicate the RFCeffect with mature normal readers of Norwegianand thus tested the generalizability ofdual-route models to a considerably moreshallow orthography than English. There was noevidence that the RFC effect reliably occurredamong Norwegian readers in this study, not evenamong certain selected readers who were seen ascandidates for possessing a dual-routearchitecture and suffering within thatarchitecture the kind of competition in naminglow-frequency irregular words that RFC issupposed to eliminate. Thus, it was notpossible to extend the applicability of adual-route approach to word recognition to therelatively shallow Norwegian orthography, andthe question of the architectural organizationof Norwegian readers was essentially leftunanswered by our data.

本文综述了近年来视觉障碍人群跨通道重组的相关研究。主要从三个方面进行了探讨视觉障碍者跨通道重组的神经基础;不同时间阶段的视觉缺失对脑内跨通道重组形成的影响;任务需求的复杂性与视觉障碍者的跨通道重组关系。这些研究成果对于促进神经康复医学的发展和重组大脑皮层某些丧失的功能提供了有价值的参考。
