Materials Used in Historical Scholarship

Citation analysis can be used to determine the kind of materials cited in any history subdiscipline. The history of gardens was chosen as the subdiscipline to be examined. As a field in art history and landscape architecture, garden history constitutes a highly articulated field of scholarly research open to current trends in historical research. A citation study of volume 1, number 1 of the Journal of Garden History reveals patterns of research materials which clearly demonstrate garden history's place in the bibliographic context of materials used in mainstream historical publication. This limited examination can be easily and effectively used by bibliographers in examining materials used in academic historical scholarship.

征订书目是影响图书采购质量的重要因素,也是衡量图书供应商实力的重要指标。文章以南京工业职业技术学院图书馆的实践为依据,对三个中标书商所提供的征订目录从可供性、时效性、规范性等方面进行统计和分析,其结果表明书商征订书目已成为高校图书馆采访工作的主要依据,但并不能成为惟一数据源。     

The Russian Book Market in 2006

The authors examine trends in Russian book publishing in 2006, including statistics and subjects covered. Russia has been the guest of honor at several recent international book fairs, a testament to the vibrancy of its publishing culture. Major prizes and anniversaries related to books, journalism, and scholarship are discussed. The article concludes with a consideration of past, present, and future price increases for books and serials—wholesale prices in Russia and Russian Press Service's prices for its library customers.     

Reading the Early Soviets: Alexander S. Gumberg and the Collection,Translation, Exchange,and Preservation of Russian Print Matter (1917–1930)

In this article, the author investigates Alexander S. Gumberg's (1887–1939) pioneering role in the development of US-Soviet print relations between 1917 and 1930. The article is based on analysis of records from Gumberg's personal archive and has two parts. The first considers Gumberg's collection of documents concerning the founding of the Soviet state in revolutionary Russia, their presentation in the American press, and their deposit in the New York Public Library. The second examines Gumberg's establishment of bilateral exchanges of print materials in the 1920s and offers insights into their theoretical and practical aspects from American and Soviet perspectives.     

Sources for Russian Book Inflation Data

The article examines five major sources of data on inflation in Russian book prices: professional book magazines, organizations' publications and Web sites, vendor catalogs, the reports written by John and Kristine Bushnell, and automated library management systems. The author discusses the limits, advantages, and methodologies for each of them.     

Epitaph for Szwede Slavic Books

Szwede Slavic Books, the largest Slavic bookstore in the United States, ceased operations in May 2010. However, throughout its operation, the bookstore made an enormous contribution to Slavic culture and Slavic library collections in the United States. In this article, the author introduces the owners, Irena and Jerzy Szwede, and longtime employee Vera Shemelis. Additionally, he discusses the firm, its books, and the special atmosphere of the store.
