Determining the Value of Cultural Goods: How Much (or How Little) Does Contingent Valuation Tell Us?

Contingent valuation methods (CVM) are now well established as a means of measuring the nonmarket demand for cultural goods and services. When combined with valuations provided through market processes (where relevant), an overall assessment of the economic value of cultural commodities can be obtained. Within a neoclassical framework, such assessments are thought to provide a complete picture of the value of cultural goods. But are there aspects of the value of cultural goods which are not fully captured, or not captured at all, within such a model? This paper argues that CVM provides an incomplete view of the nonmarket value of cultural goods, and that alternative measures need to be developed to provide a fuller account.     

The Regrettable Necessity of Contingent Valuation

Ordinary markets allow parties, not the state, to value property and projects. But they do not account for subjective value in such traditional contexts as condemnation. An awareness of these nonmarket values helps overcome any categorical opposition to the use of the contingent valuation method (CVM) to value cultural and environmental resources. But accurate CVM should measure all values, positive or negative, tononowners; it should apply generally to any substitute projects; and it should seek to account for diminishing marginal value of additional resource units. CVM should be used only to aggregate nonmarket preferences, not to skew the political debate to cultural or environmental objectives.

《中国日报》于2021年夏开始的对云南亚洲象北行的专题英文报道,利用多平台综合信息展示了中国环保实践,在全球广受好评。本次报道与习近平总书记构建中国话语和中国叙事体系的理念十分相符,其中生态理念的本土特质得到凸显,官民一体的形象得到了积极塑造,而中国科技能力的展现也融入了一个好故事的解说之中。中国当代的环境叙事必须反映人与自然的生命共同体与人类命运共同体的完整结合;"北向追象"所构造的具有中国特色的环境叙事之所以取得了很好的外宣效果,跟其紧扣这一完整性的表达密不可分,对于今后的国际传播工作也提供了颇多启示。     

西方“儿童美术的发现”析论

在人类思想史上,"儿童美术"与"儿童"类似,经历了被"无视""误视"再到"正视"的过程。艺术家、艺术理论家、教育家、心理学家等的多重视野促成了"儿童美术的发现"。各方初衷不尽相同,却具有共同的倾向,即对"自然"的追寻,对传统的僵化规则的反叛,对创造力和自由表达的重视。这些倾向是儿童美术的独立性得以凸显的思想背景。在此背景下,儿童美术中所体现的儿童"天性"成为艺术家们反思自己的创作、寻求突破的重要资源,也成为教育家、心理学家们重要的研究面向。艺术家向儿童学习,思想家赞美童心,儿童美术的本质、发展特征、心理内容等不断被揭示。这些来自不同视域的"发现",丰富着成人的儿童美术观、儿童观,也成为教育反思的重要前提。

Disciplined freedom,branded authenticity,and dependable independence: how tensions enact flexibility in lifestyle blogging careers

Analyzing 219 blog posts from 52 self-employed women lifestyle bloggers in North America, this study shows how these digital professionals navigate tensions and communicatively constitute work flexibility. In their narratives, women bloggers employed tension management approaches such as reframing, continual connections, and reflective practice in response to tensions in enacting temporal–spatial, identity, and financial flexibility. Specifically, women followed oxymoronic constructions – disciplined freedom, branded authenticity, and dependable independence – to embrace and transform competing poles of fluidity?structure, authenticity?marketability, and independence?interconnection. Expanding work–life research to the self-employed digital labor context, this study responds to recent calls to uncover more-than tension management strategies in empirical settings and contributes to a tension-centered, contextual, and processual analysis of workplace flexibility construction.     

Collecting women’s archives at the ANU Archives

The Australian National University Archives holds both the archives of the University and a large collection of business and labour archives in the Noel Butlin Archives Centre. Both are governed by collecting policies, and neither of these policies mention gender. The relative absence of women’s voices in both collections raises the question about whether archival policies should seek to redress past silences.     

从王处直墓看中国古代墓葬中“门神”形象的流变

为了祛邪御凶,中国古代墓葬中多有镇墓神物和镇墓图像。这一现象在汉代之前已经出现,汉代墓门两侧的门侍、神兽等图案正是这种镇墓意识的延续。魏晋南北朝时期,继承了在墓门两侧放置守护者的传统,墓室中还多有披甲执锐的镇墓武士形象。同时,在中国本土文化的影响下,以菩萨形出现于佛传故事中的天王,与中国武士形象不断互动交融,最终形成了隋唐墓葬中的镇墓天王俑。晚唐时期,丧葬习俗发生了重大变化,用于守护死者灵魂的镇墓神兽、镇墓天王俑逐渐消失,但仍有天王形象的守护者保护墓主的安宁。不过墓葬的天王形象也逐渐转变为将军门神的形象,且在宋、辽墓葬中继续流行。王处直墓出土的彩绘天王石刻正处于这种转变的关键时期,具有承上启下的重要意义。
