International academic staff in UK higher education: campus internationalisation and innovation in academic practice

Abstract

Amidst opportunities for universities to consider international academic staff in supporting internationalisation and innovation in academic practice, there is very little research to provide insights into their attitudes towards institutional approaches and frameworks in place to enable this. This article focuses on this research gap, suggesting that this academic community might enhance the development of internationally-informed and innovative pedagogic practice. The research reported within the article constitutes a preliminary study, set within a UK higher education case study setting. Methods included focus groups and themed in-depth interviews with a sample of 34 international academic staff from over 15 countries. The findings and discussion provide insights into the perspectives and experiences of international academic staff in relation to the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning and other institutional practice. Innovative pedagogic practice as enabled by international academic staff is discussed, as are approaches to the internationalisation of the curricula. The findings are relevant to the UK higher education context but also to the global context: academic institutions need to consider whether curriculum and processes are limited and limiting in favour of a narrow cultural lens.

行政化之疾与去行政化之方——以高校和谐校园文化建设为视域

高校行政化削弱人本文化,消解制度文化,欺凌学术文化,冲撞高雅文化,绑架器物文化,贬损关系文化。行政化严重扰乱我国高校健康发展,制约高校和谐校园文化建设。因此,力行师生为本、法制治理、教授治校、主旋律弘扬、民主决策、氛围再造等校园文化建设方略,既是高校去行政化痼疾之给力处方,更是高校和谐校园文化建设之逻辑必然。     

北京普通本科高校校区分布与功能定位研究

课题组对北京市57所普通本科高校的校区分布和功能定位情况进行了深入调研,发现半数以上高校存在2个(含)以上校区,多校区高校形成原因有四种:合并、新建、合并与新建共存、租用校舍,多校区高校校区功能定位的四种模式为:按年级分区、按学科专业分区、按教育类型分区和按任务性质分区,并指出每种模式都有其利弊。     

SCUBA Diving: Motivating and Mentoring Culturally and Cognitively Diverse Adolescent Girls to Engage in Place-Based Science Enrichment

Abstract

Many bright, talented girls from populations traditionally underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are underachieving or disengaged in school, despite having an interest in STEM. Qualitative research was conducted with teenaged girls from culturally and academically diverse backgrounds participating in an extracurricular scientific diving SCUBA program. The program provided opportunities for these girls to learn and apply STEM knowledge and SCUBA diving skills during research, service learning and place-based, hands-on projects. Findings suggest that motivation for STEM in teenaged girls increases when they are able to participate in real-life, place-based activities they find personally meaningful with other interest-based peers and mentors.     

造成广州市学生体质健康下降的原因分析

运用文献资料法、访谈法、逻辑分析法对影响广州市学生体质状况的原因进行分析,发现校园学生安全事故是影响开展学生体育活动的重要原因,事故责任的认定、超责任的经济赔偿导致学校和教师减少体育活动的时间及内容,造成广大学生体质下降。
