The role of Action Learning in supporting cross-cultural adaptation of international students

ABSTRACT

We explore the reflections of a lecturer using Action Learning (AL) meetings for the dissertation module on a one-year Master’s programme with a predominantly international student cohort. We focus on two concerns: to what extent does AL mitigate against the negative experiences of cross-cultural adaptation? And can we surface and share the learning that occurs when (international) scholars become practitioners and practitioners become (international) scholars? In the AL groups, many students seem more at ease with themselves, others and content in AL meetings than in other sessions. We scrutinised AL and our AL meetings to explore what makes it different and perhaps a better learning experience for the international student. This paper emerged following discussions with David, an e-learning and pedagogic specialist. Before continuing, note that there are two terms discussed in the literature: ‘cross-cultural adjustment’ and ‘cross cultural adaptation’. ‘Adjustment’ refers to minor changes to cope with when facing a new situation, ‘adaptation’ to larger scale changes [Haslberger, Arno, and Chris Brewster. 2007. “Domains of Expatriate Adjustment with Special Emphasis on Work.” Presented at the Cadiz University’s VI International Workshop on Human Resource Management, Jerez, Spain]. We suggest that AL be used more often and earlier with international students.     

试析种族与文化边界的离合

人类的生物多样性和文化多样性 ,与人类作为一个统一的智人种具有相似的遗传结构、生理性状和心智倾向之间 ,到底是一种什么关系 ?从现有的知识状况来看 ,人类群体的遗传变异和文化差异形成过程中二者的交互影响尚难以确定 ,但种族的地理分布和文化区域之间因生态适应而呈现出一定程度上的交叉重叠。因此 ,种族边界与文化边界之间的关联 ,既是地理隔离 ,也是人为强化的结果     

新媒体视域下来华留学生的跨文化适应探析

来华留学生跨文化适应问题产生的根本原因是中外文化差异,是由于中华文化的群体本位意识与外国文化的个体本位意识的一种异质相斥。随着新媒体的广泛应用,来华留学生的跨文化适应随之发生变化。本课题的研究可以帮助高校引导留学生合理利用新媒体资源,留学生不仅可以保持原先的社交网络,而且可以与中国的同学和朋友开展深入的交流,这对于他们理解和接纳中国文化,更好地适应中国环境,形成合理的价值取向有很大的帮助。     

中国教育券本土化转向:实践变通与反思

教育券自在中国实践以来,理论界和实践界产生了不同的看法。"湖北监利变法"、长兴教育券等实践表明,我国教育券的实践在变通,即偏离原初意义上的"弗里德曼"式教育券,日益走向以"教育公平、社会效益、政治价值"为目标导向的变通发展道路。其"本土化"变通主要体现在扶持薄弱学校、资助贫困家庭学生以及支持中等职业教育的发展等方面。

心理健康目标的实现只有学校配备心理专家才能完成 ,依靠学校全体教师进行心育只能流于形式 ;教育辅导是社会发展对学校教育的必然要求 ,它能有效地实现心理健康的部分目标 ;教育辅导的内容与学校教育内容有较强的通融性、理解性 ,师范教育具有开设教育辅导课程必要性与可能性。     

浅论《巴黎圣母院》的电影改编

电影被称为第七艺术.是继文学、戏剧、音乐、绘画、雕塑、建筑之后的又一门新兴的独特艺术.它与其它前辈艺术有着密不可分的继承、借鉴关系,尤其与文学中的小说有着不了的情缘.<巴黎圣母院>是雏克多·雨果的力作,试图通过它的两个电影改编版本之间比较,来探讨经典改编的是与非及电影改编的忠实与否问题.     

苏轼《洞仙歌》杂考

1957年冒广生和毛泽东同志讨论诗词创作时说苏轼的《洞仙歌》词是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》而出。其实，对此问题，从宋至今，众说纷纭，认为苏轼的《洞仙歌》是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》而出，只是其中一说。通过考证可知，苏轼《洞仙歌》不是檗括盂昶的《玉楼春》，恰恰相反，是南宋人檗括苏轼《洞仙歌》而成《玉楼春》并假托盂昶著。     

Cooperative learning: a methodological innovation in teacher training / El aprendizaje cooperativo: una innovación metodológica en la formación del profesorado

Cooperative learning is an important methodological strategy to develop students’ general competencies. In this paper, we show an educational innovation experience of cooperative learning developed as part of the ‘Educational contexts and processes’ subject of the Speciality in Technology and Industrial Processes of the Master’s Degree in Secondary Education Teaching at the University of Valencia, during the 2011–12 academic year. The innovation experience becomes ‘meta-experience’ since it allows students to reflect on their own knowledge in building the learning process. The overall objective of this experience is to develop attitudes and skills for cooperative learning in future secondary education teachers. To this end, we designed the activity ‘Short Film’ that employs cooperative learning as a methodological strategy to foster learning and media literacy. The experience gave students the opportunity to reflect, discuss and be involved in their learning process. Furthermore, the academic results were excellent and students valued the educational innovation in a positive way.
