Analysing the integration of engineering in science lessons with the Engineering-Infused Lesson Rubric

ABSTRACT

Science teachers are being called on to incorporate engineering practices into their classrooms. This study explores whether the Engineering-Infused Lesson Rubric, a new rubric designed to target best practices in engineering education, could be used to evaluate the extent to which engineering is infused into online science lessons. Eighty lessons were selected at random from three online repositories, and coded with the rubric. Overall results documented the strengths of existing lessons, as well as many components that teachers might strengthen. In addition, a subset of characteristics was found to distinguish lessons with the highest level of engineering infusion. Findings are discussed in relation to the potential of the rubric to help teachers use research evidence-informed practice generally, and in relation to the new content demands of the U.S. Next Generation Science Standards, in particular.     

The effect of the Horsham Greenpower Goblin Challenge on children's attitudes towards science,engineering and technology

This research examines the effects of the Horsham Greenpower Goblin Challenge (HGGC), a hands-on science, engineering and technology (SET) project, on the attitudes of Year 5, primary-school children towards SET. The data collection centred on pre- and post-HGGC questionnaires using Likert scales and picture/word images of scientists and engineers. It was found that the HGGC did not significantly alter children's attitudes to SET and did not dispel previous negative images and attitudes. It was concluded that a greater understanding and acknowledgement of children's existing attitudes was required when designing initiatives aimed at dispelling negative and promoting positive images of SET.     

Academic failure of first-year engineering and technological students in India and assessment of motivation factors – a case study

This study has been conducted to show that there is a recent trend in engineering colleges in India that students who are considered to be highly intelligent show poor academic performance during their 1st year. This article is proposed to examine the role of motivation factors such as teaching methods and learning material in the academic performance of engineering and technological students in India. A test was carried out among engineering students. A total of 200 male and female students participated in this test. A 2-group discriminator analysis was done to analyse the data. The results showed that there was a significant correlation (p = 0.000) between motivation factors and academic performance of engineering students. The higher the rating of these factors by the students, the higher their performance.

为了使行业需求与高校人才培养模式对接,世界各国行业协会与高校联合实施专业能力测评,并以此作为应用型本科专业毕业生顺利进入行业的必要条件之一。应用型本科专业能力测评以人才培养必须响应和满足行业需求的能力标准为切入点,已经逐渐成为保证高等教育质量的重要手段。针对我国内地应用型本科专业人才培养模式中存在的问题,借鉴英国皇家工料测量师学会（RICS）的经验,结合中国专业能力测评制度的发展趋势,设计出适合我国工程管理专业的人才培养模式,并为我国工程管理类本科专业能力测评制度的构建提供合理的建议。

文章通过对工程和创新内涵的分析,总结创新型应用人才所应具备的素质,并根据创新型工程人才的成长规律从提高工科学生工程意识和责任感、工程实践能力和工程创新能力等三个方面探讨培养卓越工程师后备人才的教学理念,以期为相应的教学改革与实施提供参考。

随着建筑行业的高速发展,工程造价毕业生的需求量大幅度提高,新形势下社会对毕业生的要求也越来越高。结合工程造价省优势专业建设,从校企合作平台建设、完善实训基地建设、校企合作共育人等方面,校企深度融合共同培养高技能人才。     

Ranking Romanian academic departments in three fields of study using the g-index

The scientific performance of 64 political science, sociology and marketing departments in Romania is investigated with the aid of the g-index. The assessment of departments based on the g-index shows, within each of the three types of departments that make up the population of the study, a strong polarisation between top performers (very few) and weak performers (much more numerous). This alternative assessment is also found to be largely consistent with an official ranking of departments carried out in 2011 by the Ministry of Education. To conduct the evaluation of departments the individual scientific output of 1385 staff members working in the fields of political science, sociology and marketing is first determined with the aid of the ‘Publish or Perish’ software based on the Google Scholar database. Distinct department rankings are then created within each field using a successive (second-order) g-index.
