The limits of cultural competence: an Indigenous Studies perspective

Taking the Universities Australia report, National best practice framework for Indigenous cultural competency in Australian universities (2011) as the starting point for its discussion, this paper examines the applicability of cultural competence in the design and delivery of Australian Indigenous Studies. It argues that both the conceptual underpinnings and the operationalisation of cultural competence necessitate an over-reliance on essentialised notions of Indigeneity, cast in radical opposition to non-Indigeneity, which negate multiple and diverse expressions of Indigenous identity and lived experience. Thus, this approach perpetuates the very colonialist logics Indigenous Studies should endeavour to overcome. Secondly, it argues that cultural competency's emphasis on non-Indigenous self-reflexivity, broadly consistent as it is with both scholarship and praxis in Indigenous Studies, is represented in some of the literature as uncritical deference to an always-unified Indigeneity, thereby exacerbating the original essentialising impulse evident in the cultural competence paradigm. Therefore, this paper proposes that Indigenous Studies should explore the limits of self-reflexivity, with a view to establishing a genuinely anti-colonial/decolonising praxis that incorporates the capacity to negotiate Indigenous intracultural diversity along with other markers for identity.     

Rebuilding attendance practices with youth: the role of social mediation

This article highlights the experiences of students and educators from a larger sociocultural study of participation and engagement at a senior alternative high school programme in British Columbia, Canada. Drawing on participant observation, active interviews and document analysis, school attendance was remediated as a meaningful social practice as a result of the relationships young people formed with educators and peers, rather than meaningful in and of itself or in relation to academic performance. These findings trouble school attendance policies that locate absenteeism as a problem within individual students and as decontextualised from their lived experiences. Findings also foreground the importance of examining how school attendance may be interpreted by students. For some students, participation in relationships and communities lies behind school attendance, highlighting the necessity of attending to the role of identity and values alongside of the construction of knowledge as central to the work of schools.     

育人的艺术：高校辅导员职业追求的境界

育人是一个漫长和复杂的过程,处处存在着艺术性。高校辅导员作为学生事务最直接的参与者与管理者,在大学生的成长与发展过程中起着重要的作用,应当把握好育人的艺术。把育人的艺术作为辅导员职业追求的境界,不仅能够发挥积极的教育意义,还可以使辅导员在育人的艺术创造中获得职业认同感和职业幸福感。     

高职医学检验技术学生的专业认同现状调查研究——以廊坊卫生职业学院为例

目的:从专业认知、专业情感、专业意志、专业价值观、专业技能、专业期望六个维度描述廊坊卫生职业学院医学检验技术专业学生专业认同的现状,提出强化学生专业认同的策略,以促进医学检验技术专业的发展、促进学生成长、成才。方法:对我校93名高职检验技术专业学生专业认同情况进行问卷调查,运用SPSS软件对调查数据进行描述性统计。结果:廊坊卫生职业学院高职医学检验技术专业一年级学生在六个维度方面评分均稍高于二年级学生。在专业价值观方面(t=2.80,P=0.01,P<0.05),有统计学意义。结论:加强专业紧迫感教育,建立见习机制,加强就业指导,使其看到自己的未来,提高学生专业认同感。     

Niels Bukh's Gymnastics School in Denmark, 1912–1933: Gymnastics,Erotics, and Male Bonding

Around 1916–1917 the Danish gymnastics pedagogue Niels Bukh (1880–1950) created, in an international sense, a revolutionary men's gymnastics, and in 1920 he established Denmark's and the world's first folk high school of physical education and sport. During the 1930s, Niels Bukh and his team of gymnasts first became a symbol for the dynamic Danish farming community, and then for the face of Denmark both at home and abroad. Bukh changed the stereotypical male expression of bodily dynamics, which in Danish rural gymnastics had been almost military. He made it legitimate for the young lads to get in close physical contact and to work in pairs in order to create beautiful masculine gymnastic choreographies. Within the aesthetic history of masculinity, it has often been male homosexual aestheticians, designers, musicians, dancers, and so on who have opened new avenues for the expression of male emotion, which was a trademark of Bukh's achievements, too.     

城市新区培育和践行社会主义核心价值观问题

城市新区是我国新的经济增长极。初建时期其文化纷杂多元而无主体,有来自域外文明的世界文化,有传承中华的传统文化,有表现本土特色的地方文化,有彰显市场原则的大众文化等,这些文化对新区发展有一定的促进作用,但也造成一定程度的混乱局面。如何在纷杂文化中确立社会主义核心价值观的主导地位以引领新区建设,既是理论问题也是现实问题。社会主义核心价值观自身的先进性、民族性、时代性,以及新区的人文环境,为城市新区培育和践行社会主义核心价值提供了前提条件。应通过媒体和城市其他载体和组织,整合城市新区文化资源,在城市新区人民的参与下,培育和践行社会主义核心价值观。     

本科低年级学生跨学科学习经验的自主建构

在充满变革的环境中,本科低年级学生进行学业规划或职业生涯规划的价值是"学会应变"。研究着眼于本科低年级学生所处的跨学科学习情境,从理论层面和实践层面引导个体提高学业/职业生涯"探索、规划、适应"能力。研究发现,学业/职业生涯探索、学业/职业生涯规划、职业未来时间洞察力和自主性这两个积极人格特点、跨学科学习经验、职业认同(含学术认同)五者,是不可分割的整体。以系统性思维探寻学业规划或职业生涯规划之道,不仅是本科低年级学生创新自主职业生涯管理途径、方法和策略的重心,而且是高等院校创新本科低年级学生职业生涯教育模式及体系的重心。     

双重身份下辅导员作为跨界人的行为分析

跨界人指的是处于组织边界、维持组织内外联系的＂中介者＂。结合大学辅导员的双重角色定位,跨界行为是辅导员工作的核心,其有效性直接影响学生成长和学校组织的效率。基于跨界人的理论研究,对辅导员承担的跨界人行为——管理组织形象、处理环境信息、管理环境关系进行分析,指出跨界人所处的特殊位置带给辅导员的角色冲突、角色模糊和角色超载等压力,并从正确看待组织界限、注重组织支持-和提升个人工作扶巧三个方面提出了若干缓解角色压力的建议。     

Towards the Liberal Model

Despite the current insecurity within the journalistic profession, there is still some common ground uniting news workers: a shared perception of the role of journalism in Western societies—a social agreement between journalists, media owners and audiences as to what is good journalism. Research has shown that this role rests heavily upon notions of journalists as watchdogs of democracy, and sometimes as pedagogues and interpreters of complex events. However, this role is not static in any sense; it changes along with the news industry and the surrounding society. The question is, how? This article addresses this question by examining the case of Swedish journalists. Empirical support is drawn from the Swedish Journalist Survey, which has been conducted on five occasions between 1989 and 2011, thus providing a unique opportunity to follow changes to a journalistic community over time. The results indicate the far-reaching adaptability of Swedish journalists to new conditions; a liberalization of ideals, such that ideals of objectivity and neutrality are strengthening at a rather quick pace. However, the results also show how they close ranks behind the watchdog ideal, which could be interpreted as an act of resistance.
