Barriers associated with the use of English in the teaching of technology in grade 9 at some schools in Eastern Cape Province

ABSTRACT

English is the language of learning and teaching in most schools in South Africa. The ability of teachers and students to understand and communicate with each other in English contributes to better performance in Science and Technology subjects. This article explores the challenges posed by the use of English in the teaching and learning of Technology at schools in Eastern Cape. The study was undertaken in order to gauge the commonness of problems related to the use of English. The sample for the questionnaire comprised 57 teachers who taught Technology at different schools in the district. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with five subject specialists in Technology. The findings revealed that the use of English militates against effective learning and teaching of Technology. In order to enhance the communication skills of students, it is recommended that teachers increase dialogue in English by means of small-group discussion, exploratory talk and argumentation.

To talk or not to talk? From Telkom to Hellkom: A critical reflection on the current telecommunication policy in South Africa from a social justice perspective

With the development of new information and communication technologies, the right to communicate assumes new dimensions, since it is almost impossible to fully participate in the globalized world without access to modern information and communication technologies. South Africa held its first democratic elections in 1994 and has subsequently returned to the international arena. Its citizens should rightly expect to be able to participate in all that this return offers, not only politically, but also economically and socially. Telecommunications are vital to making such participation possible. In recognition of this fact, the newly elected government developed policies and enacted legislation to ensure that the telecommunications sector, and specifically the sole fixed line service provider Telkom, provides South African citizens affordable access to the telecommunications infrastructure whilst providing acceptable levels of service. However, rather than meeting its obligation to the government and the people of South Africa, Telkom has misused its monopoly. The social injustice that this situation creates is critically examined against the background of the right to communicate based on Rawls' principles of social justice and Sen's capability approach.

非英语专业学生的二语交际意愿与融合型动机

以二语交际意愿模型和社会教育模式为理论依据,采用问卷的方式调查了部分中国的非英语专业专科学生在英语课堂上的交际意愿与融合型动机及融合型动机的三个组成部分的关系.研究结果发现,融合型动机与交际意愿呈显著正相关;融入性态度、对学习环境的态度和动机均与交际意愿呈显著正相关,其中动机与交际意愿的相关性最大.虽然Gardner认为融入性态度和对学习环境的态度是动机的主要支撑因素,但在本研究中融入性态度和对学习环境的态度没有产生同等水平的动机.     

流媒体版权侵权初探

近来流媒体正取代网络下载成为作品在线体验的主流,文章从流媒体的两种方式即点击流媒体和直播流媒体两个方面分析公众传播权和复制权对流媒体技术的法律规制问题。从欧洲判例来看,传统广播权适用于直播流媒体还面临着不确定性,而用复制权规制流媒体技术则带来了相互矛盾的判决结果。从现有的数字版权法规定来看,要妥善地区别流媒体技术使用版权作品是合法还是侵权比较困难。

随着人们获取各种信息的涉及面和便捷度的加大,人们对涵盖到自身经济生活和社会生活方方面面的兴趣也逐渐加大,民生类访谈节目应运而生。民生类访谈节目是亲民的节目,编导是节目创作中的灵魂。编导的创作活动贯穿于节目录制的前期、中期和后期的全过程,必须加强对编导的政治思想、业务水平、美学修养和组织协调能力等素质的培养,才能发挥好编导在民生类访谈节目中的引导乃至隐性引导作用。     

Energy,Episode, and Relationship: A Test of Communicate Bond Belong Theory

To test the communicate bond belong (CBB) theory, this investigation explores the association between communication episode and closeness, affective well-being, and social energy expenditure. Participants from community (n = 62) and student (n = 54) samples were contacted five times a day for five consecutive days and reported on social interactions. Multilevel model results (n = 2,722) indicated that four episodes (i.e., affection, meaningful talk, catching up, joking around) were associated with greater closeness and affective well-being. Energy expending episodes occurred less frequently than less expending interactions. The ratio of closeness to social energy expenditure was associated with greater well-being and decreased likelihood of future social interaction. Both interaction partner and communication episode independently contributed to closeness and affective well-being. Findings offer initial support for two propositions and the principle of energy conservation in CBB theory, and contribute to research on the relationship-constituting function of everyday talk.
