Historicizing tianrenheyi as correlative cosmology for rethinking education in modern China and beyond

Abstract

The Chinese tianrenheyi thesis bespeaks a correlative cosmology irreducible to the Western metaphysics. This article historicizes tianrenheyi for new implications to help rethink the given concepts of ‘person/thing,’ ‘environment/nature,’ and ‘relationality’ in contemporary ethical and environmental education in three steps. First, it turns to Yu Ying-Shih’s writing for a historical and ethical picture of tianrenheyi as an ‘Axial breakthrough’ in Confucius' time and with direct relevance to Confucian person-making education. Second, it moves on to Roger Ames’ unpacking of tianrenheyi as hospitalized in a ‘correlative cosmology’ and ‘Confucian relational personhood’ to help us re-understand Confucian ‘person’ as being relational. Finally, it shows how these re-invoked philosophical–ethical–cosmological theses expose a ‘foundational individualism’ which grounds and confines current educational thinking to an anthropocentric (dis)ordering. As an alternative, this article calls for a productive symbiotic conjoining between humans and their cultural–natural environs toward nurturing today’s youth into ecologically literate, responsible, and responsive co-beings.

《鹖冠子》宇宙观的哲学解读

《鹖冠子》是黄老道家的重要典籍,它在继承战国黄老学思想的基础上,提出了极具特色的＂道＂、＂天＂、＂气＂的宇宙观。以＂阴阳＂、＂元气＂、＂天地＂等物质性范畴对＂道＂作了拓展,将原始道家的生天生地之道发展为天地之道,并且纳气入道,强化了道的现实性品格。这一理论的提出,不仅推动了先秦天道观的发展,光大了从老子开其端的自然主义传统,而且进一步涤荡了传统天命神学的迷信成分,因而使其带有鲜明的理性光彩。     

和谐哲学宇宙观及其在当代的发展

和谐的哲学宇宙观是中外哲学的一份重要理论遗产,也是科学发展观和建构和谐社会的重要思想源头。《易》就以物质的“气”的有序运动来阐释宇宙的整体的和谐运作,明代《幼学》又以“七政”等具体天象知识充实了《易》的“和谐宇宙”论。康德的星云假说使古希腊原子漩涡宇宙结构说推陈出新,从“开放宇宙”的新视角解决了宇宙总体的和谐发展源泉。马克思主义和谐宇宙观吸纳了康德的和谐宇宙观,解决了达尔文主义者未解决的人的起源与社会本质问题。新诞生的宇宙循环往复理论,不只推倒了宇宙第一次大爆炸假说,且以宇航数字化实测信息,在高新技术基础上实现向马克思主义和谐宇宙观复归。     

Celestial and mythical origins of the citadel of Bukhara

Narshakhī's The History of Bukhara, an account from the tenth century AD that has been narrated as a mythical and strange story about the formation of the citadel of Bukhara, has received scanty scholarly attention. This study addresses some of the unknown semantic and symbolic origins of Iranian citadels and fortresses through an analysis of documented legends and other classical sources. This analysis shows that the citadel (qal'a) was built based on the conceptual archetype of the Utopia of Kangdiz (Siāvošgerd) and the geometric shape of Banāt Naʿsh (Big Dipper), which has played a symbolic role in protecting and guarding in Persian cosmology. This celestial analogy can explain the causes and origins of the irregular shape of some other Iranian citadels.

There is no place of nature; there is only the nature of place: animate landscapes as methodology for inquiry in the Coast Salish territory

Indigenist scholars have been attending to the research process in ways that highlight the move toward inquiry, the beginnings of the research journey. The energies that animate imagination and inquiry need to be respected and accounted for. If we recognize that place and the consciousness of landscape contain the primordial elements for the Indigenous mind, then it follows that respectful Indigenous research methods should engage with the landscape as the beginning point for inquiry. Centering place and place-ness as containing the ontological meaning of Indigenous methodology is also a way to excavate the specific effects of colonization on Indigenous landscapes and communities. Much Indigenous thought radiates from an invocation of a sentient topography, a land that is aware of human presence. This writing considers what a methodology of place, specifically in the Coast Salish territory, might consist of.
